Did you know that Main Street Station dates back to 1901? πŸ€”

πŸ”™ 123 years ago Main Street Station, Richmond, VA was built by the Seaboard Air Line and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway πŸš‚

πŸ›€οΈ In 1971 Amtrak took over service until 1975 when they moved their Richmond stops to Staples Mill πŸ—ΊοΈ

🌊 In 1972 floods from Hurricane Agnes damaged the station and in 1976 + 1983 the station faced two fires πŸ”₯

✨ In 2003 the station reopened to Amtrak service after repairs + renovations and serves as a beautiful and functional transportation hub once again πŸš‰

βž• The station is also home to a train shed turned event space, art gallery and a Virginia Welcome Center

Ever wonder how Richmond streets got their names? πŸ€” The city was originally bordered by what’s now Broad Street to the north and the river to the south and stretched from 17th to 25th Streets west to east.

πŸ”’ North-south streets were numbered first through ninth and east-west streets were lettered alphabetically.

πŸ”€ When Richmond became the state capital in 1780, city leaders gave east-west streets new names: A Street became β€œArch Street,” B Street became β€œByrd Street,” F Street "Franklin Street" and so on. Some names were lost to history but a few stuck.

INTERESTING NOTES ↓
πŸ›£οΈ Cary, formerly D Street, became Dover Plan Road. The name Cary comes from Colonel Archibald Cary, a Virginian who served in the House of Burgesses from 1756-1776.

πŸ›£οΈ Main was E Street, then Elm Street, but it became Main because it was the main thoroughfare of the town.

πŸ›£οΈ Foushee is named for Richmond’s first mayor, William Foushee. Foushee was appointed to be the city’s postmaster by President Thomas Jefferson and he kept the job for the last 16 years of his life.

πŸ›£οΈ Hull is named after Isaac Hull who commanded the USS Constitution during the American Revolution.

πŸ›£οΈ McDonough, Perry, Porter, Bainbridge, and Decatur Streets are all named for commanders from the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
