Congratulations to Bethany Theological Seminary & Dr. Jeff Carter, the 2026 David Rodgers Friend of the RSO! At the RSO's annual board meeting on August 17th Jeff Carter accepted the award celebrating a decade of partnership and impact.
In 2015, President Jeff Carter saw a natural connection between Bethany Theological Seminary and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra: a shared commitment to excellence. What began as a sponsorship has grown into a recital series and, now, a multi-year investment that will help shape the future of the RSO for years to come.
Accompanying the Seminary’s first financial gift, Carter wrote:
“From the beginning of our formal relationship to today, we have deeply appreciated the outstanding performances the RSO consistently delivers and the equally impressive commitment to our schools and the wider community.
“In recognition of the quality and dedication of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and to support its ongoing programs, Bethany Theological Seminary will donate $10,000 annually for the next five years, starting with the 2025–26 season. The total commitment is $50,000!”
Each year, the Seminary’s support will help ensure that the RSO opens its season with a guest soloist who reflects this shared commitment to excellence.
This year, that soloist is Matthew Vaughn, a graduate of Richmond High School and the 1987 winner of the RSO’s Young Artist Competition. Vaughn returns to the RSO stage for the opening season concert—his first appearance with the orchestra as an adult.
The RSO Board and staff extend their heartfelt thanks to Bethany Theological Seminary for its continued sponsorship, partnership, and investment in the orchestra’s future. This commitment not only celebrates the excellence of the RSO today but also helps ensure that excellence continues to grow for generations to come.
