Friday Cheers is a weekly summer concert series that brings some of the biggest up-and-coming artists to Brown’s Island along Downtown Richmond's riverfront every Friday in May and June at the best price for a family-friendly night of live music.

Husband and wife singer-songwriting duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, known as The War and Treaty, released their debut album in 2018. In 2019, they first performed at the first ever indoor Friday Cheers, which was moved from Brown's Island to the Broadberry due to rain.

After releasing their third studio album in 2023, they
🏆 Became the 1st Black duo nominated for Duo of the Year at both the Country Music Awards and Academy of Country Music
🏆Were nominated for Best New Artist and Best American Roots Song for the 2024 Grammy Awards (the Grammy for Best American Roots Song would go to fellow Friday Cheers alum Jason Isbell)

Born and raised here in Richmond, Lucy Dacus is a hometown favorite.

Following her Friday Cheers concert, Dacus would form the indie band boygenius with artists Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.

In 2024 Boygenius would receive 7 Grammy nominations, winning the Grammy Awards for
🏆 Best Alternative Music Album
🏆 Best Rock Song
🏆 Best Rock Performance

As a solo artist, Dacus returned to play Friday Cheers in 2019. Since then, she has opened for Billie Eilish's "Hit Me Hard and Soft" tour and performed at popular music festivals such as All Things Go and Glastonbury.

Dacus is currently on her international "Forever is a Feeling" Tour for her fourth studio album.

Omara 'Bombino' Moctar is a Tuareg singer-songwriter and acclaimed guitarist from the Saharan country of Niger in northwest Africa.

Dubbed "The Sultan of Shred" by the New York Times, he is the subject of multiple documentaries about his journey to becoming a musician while seeking refuge in multiple countries due to unrest at home.

Bombino first came to Brown's Island in 2019 to perform at the Richmond Folk Festival.

🏆 A few years before performing at Friday Cheers, Bombino received a Grammy Nomination for Best World Music Album, becoming the first Nigerien artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

Before the arenas and sold out tours, he stepped onto this stage and gave Richmond a set people still talk about. The kind of night you still hear about years later.

This was right before his breakout, making it a true “you saw him here first” Friday Cheers moment.

Since his Friday Cheers performance, Childers has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning the award for Best Country Song in 2026.

Natalie Prass is a singer- songwriter from Virginia Beach. After starting her music career as a keyboardist for Jenny Lewis, she released her own debut studio album in 2015 with Spacebomb records here in Richmond. The album was recognized as one of the Best New Albums by Pitchfork.

Going into their 2018 Friday Cheers performance, the New Orleans band had just won NPR's Tiny Desk Contest the year prior.

Following their Friday Cheers concert, they would be nominated for four Grammy Awards including
🏆 Best New Artist in 2020
🏆 Best Progressive R&B Album in 2023
🏆 Best Global Music Performance in 2024

In 2025 they won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album🎉

With Friday Cheers taking a pause for construction of the Brown’s Island Improvement Project and our sights set on the 2027 season, we’re taking a moment to look back at the shows that helped shape Friday Cheers.

First up, May 3, 2019, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real.

Lukas Nelson, the son of legendary country music singer Willie Nelson, started playing with his bandmates as the backing band for Rock and Rock Hall of Fame artist, Neil Young, collaborating with him on several albums, festival performances, and tours. The band would go on to collaborate and perform with many more celebrated artists such as B.B. King and Lady Gaga.

The band's 2019 Friday Cheers performance came right off the heels of their successful collaboration with actor Bradley Cooper on his Oscar-winning film, "A Star is Born."

If you didn't miss a show in 2012, you remember this.

Alabama Shakes had just released their debut album and came through Friday Cheers for a 45 minute set. By the end of it, you knew they weren’t staying small for long.

That night still gets brought up. Now they’re back in Richmond, opening the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront for the season.

From a short set at Cheers to opening the second season at the amphitheater along the river. Full circle!
