ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS

Kha’s exhibition, Facades, features a continuation of Kha’s practice of collaborative, multi-generational work wherein the artist is both photographer and performer. The artist’s photographs take the form of living collages, forgoing digital manipulation in favor of physical layering in-camera in the form of cut outs, mark making, masks, and wallpapers.

Toftness’ When Seeds Are Sent for Flowers presents a selection of brand new images alongside works from Toftness’ MFA thesis, To Redecorate a Dream, focusing on human relationships with technology and on slippages between perceived and mediated realities.

Both exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, October 24.

SUBMISSION OPEN THROUGH 8/28:

Candela Photographic Arts is delighted to introduce our pilot BINGO open call exhibition and tiny print swap, featuring fiteen small photographic works which will be on view from October 2 – October 24, and will culminate in a special closing day bingo fundraiser during which each work on view will go to a new home with a photo lover!

This is a tight turnaround, so take note of important dates:

Submissions close: August 28
Roster announced: September 3
Print delivery deadline: September 22
Exhibition opens: October 2
Final day/ Bingo event: October 24

Juried artists will send two editions of their unframed print to Candela: one, a donated* print, will be framed in a standard frame and be available to win for our first Bingo Day. The other unframed print will be lovingly shipped to another participating artist in the Bingo show through a randomized print swap.

WHAT TO KNOW:
*exhibition prints will be treated as an “in kind” donation to Candela Photographic Arts and will help support programming fundraising efforts through our bingo event
- submission to the exhibition and print swap is free
- Candela will provide frames for exhibition works, and shipping for unframed print swap works
- submissions need to have two available editions for participation (one to contribute to bingo, one to swap with another artist). Variant editions count!
- submitted works must be 12” or less on the longest side.

While we are thrilled to support the practice of each featured artist and promote sales of work where we can, it may be good to note that this particular exhibition and print swap is philanthropic and community-focused in nature and may not be a great fit for artists looking for big sales opportunities! That’s okay! We know! We still love you! If this isn’t your jam, other upcoming submission opportunities include our Candelar open call at the end of September and our UnBound16! open call in January 2027.

It’s the final day to see UnBound15! before the gallery takes a little break for our September openings by Tommy Kha and JW Toftness!

The gallery is open today from 12-5. Swing by in person to see these works and enter our $10 raffle to feed Big Penelope and win Candela goodies! All entries get a Penelope sticker. We’ll draw the winner at 8pm. :)

DON’T FORGET! Join us tonight, Saturday, August 1, from 6-10pm for our first summer fundraising party as a 501c3! The beloved annual “UnBound! party” becomes CANDELAFEST and helps support all operations as Candela Photographic Arts.

For lovers of vintage Candela, back alley chicken is back, with legendary Terry Brown passing the sacred torch to our crop-topped Tender Boys! The scavenger hunt returns better than ever with haiku clues and sweet sun, moon, and fried egg prizes! Fried pickles and bubbly bevs! Delicious smoothies provided by SOMEWHERE GOOD, spun tunes by Don Chirashi, and baked treasures by Lisa Makes Pie! There will be a giant interactive hen of divination! Opportunities to win handmade, photographic, and event-related prizes with at the raffle table! For the first time, we’ll also be sharing our Collection acquisitions and honorarium recipients at the party! We’ll be crowning a Deity of the Hour! We’ll have fresh Candela and Tender Boys merch up for grabs! The mischief never ceases!
