Hot on the heels of the 50th anniversary of Herbie Hancock’s fourteenth project ‘Thrust’ (1974), today we celebrate the 78th birthday of our “friend” and “artist member” of our international jazz page, Mr. Mike Clark.
Mike Clark's performance on Herbie Hancock's 1974 album ‘Thrust’, particularly ‘Actual Proof’, is a bench mark of funk drumming. Mike’s intricate and syncopated rhythms are a standout feature, showcasing his ability to blend complex patterns with a deep groove. The track is known for its challenging time signatures and rapid tempo, which Clark navigates with precision and creativity, making it a favorite among drummers and jazz enthusiasts around the world!
As for “Actual Proof,” Clark’s drumming is characterized by his use of ghost notes and syncopation, creating a dense, textured sound that drives the track forward. His playing is both technically tight, and deeply lyrical, providing a rhythmic foundation that complements Hancock’s keyboard work and the rest of the band’s improvisations. The groove Mike lays down is not only complex but also incredibly tight, demonstrating his exceptional touch and timing.
In my humble opinion, “Actual Proof” after fifty years remains the pinnacle of funk drumming, and Clark’s performance is a key reason why ‘Thrust’ is one of Herbie Hancock’s most important works.
