The making of the Columbine series: six unique weavings from three original paintings. Cloth is woven, painted, unwoven then rewoven. This is a lovely dance between my intention as an artist, my skill as a weaver, and then being able to give up that control, to see what the pulling apart of the first cloth, the mechanics of the loom, and the personality of the threads as they are being rewoven have to say in the work. Chance, collaboration, and serendipity come together in this process. Working this way, despite the traditionally repetitive nature of weaving, is always incredibly engaging and full of wonder.

Happy New Year! I can’t believe I get to start the year by sharing a brand new body of work with the world. Here’s an in-process preview of a pair of works called “Hydrangea Puff 1 and 2”. Both will be featured in my upcoming show titled Transient Phenomena, opening this Thursday, January 8 at Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. All the pieces in this show are interpretations of various little natural treasures I’ve collected over the years. The work starts as a drawing, becomes a painting on handwoven cloth, and is then unwoven and rewoven to create two unique but related works from the original painting. Link to the show in bio.

All three of these paintings emerged from looking at the same thing: a magnolia seed pod. I love the dance of imagination and translation. These painting are only the start of another series of translations. They will be taken apart, crisp will turn to hazy, new things will happen.

I want to get everything I can out of the highly labor-intensive process of weaving and dyeing my own raw material but as scraps get smaller it gets harder. So it feels like this piece was created from thin air: a solid and tangible field of weaving sprung from “unusable” bits.
