Orbital Music Park

Orbital Music Park Orbital Music Park helps musicians of every style, age, and skill level play together more often. We're musicians. We know how hard it is to connect.

We want to help you make magic. Morgan Huff and Tom Illmensee are the co-founders of Orbital Music Park and the organizers. They have been playing music together in many bands in Richmond, VA (and beyond) for more than 20 years. Participating musicians will be screened and matched personally by Morgan and Tom. There’s no algorithm or anything fancy here. Just two dudes working hard to match everyone up. We're focused only on helping musicians in RVA.

SAT, JUN 20 / JOHN D’EARTH / 8PM

“This recording reminds me of why I love John’s music. It sounds like it’s happening now. I’m hearing it for the first time but it is also familiar. I listen again and again and a familiar voice says something brilliant and unexpected. The Mood or Sarah’s Bracelet make me want to go back to the beginning as soon as I get to the end. That’s how the whole record is.” - DAVE MATTHEWS

John D’earth plays trumpet with a striking, original sound and a technique that he mobilizes for spitfire improvisation and gripping melodies. A consummate jazz artist, composer, and gifted educator, he draws inspiration from collaborators on the bandstand, from students, and from nature. Internationally known for his contributions in straight-ahead jazz (D’earth served as foil to guitarist Emily Remler, added brawn to the George Gruntz Big Band, and played on Bob Moses’ early recordings) he exhibits omnivorous musical tastes including free improvisation, mainstream rock, and modern classical music. Since he joined the musicians union at age fourteen this wildly eclectic musician has performed across the globe. He appears on over 100 recordings on vinyl, CDs, film, and video in a career that spans the analogue and digital eras. Despite a commanding musical presence he possesses an uncanny ability to bring out the best in musicians with whom he shares the bandstand. All of this is evident on his newly released album, Coin Of The Realm, (Cosmology Records 2023). This song cycle of originals, recorded with his long-standing quintet, reveals a musician who, in his seventies, is still evolving and very much in his creative prime.

SAT, JUN 20 / RICHMOND SYNTH COLLECTIVE / 3PM MEETUP

A free meetup for local electronic musicians to network, share knowledge, and play music together.

Richmond Synth Collective’s free monthly synth meetup is all about connecting with Richmonders who also love to create and produce electronic sound art. No single discipline, musical genre, or approach is prized. We value all tools alike from free virtual instruments to bespoke synth modules, and likewise our regular participants range from seasoned musicians to bedroom hobbyists - and even those who may not create, but are simply interested in seeing a little of what the local electronic music scene has to offer. You are more than welcome to bring any kind of synth to display, play, and even perform with.
