10 Powerful New Year’s Goals for Professional Drummers 🎯

1. Develop a Recognizable Personal Sound 🎧
Technique is everywhere. Identity is rare. Make it a goal to define what makes you instantly recognizable: touch, dynamics, note placement, groove choices, or even how you tune your drums. Study yourself as much as you study your heroes.
Goal: If someone hears eight bars of your playing, they know it’s you.

2. Master One Weak Area (Not Ten) 🧠
Instead of spreading yourself thin, pick one weakness you’ve avoided: odd meters, brushes, Latin styles, linear chops, or slow tempos. Commit deeply and stay uncomfortable.
Progress comes from discomfort, not variety.

3. Improve Your Time Feel at All Tempos ⏱️
Not just fast. Not just medium. Great drummers feel equally confident at 40 BPM and 220 BPM. Spend real time with a click, a gap click, or no click at all.
Pocket is currency. Invest wisely.
