A quiet moment in the final weeks of World War I. 🛏️

Albert Alexander Smith's "My Bunk" is drawn from his personal experience serving in the US Army during World War I in France. Smith served mostly in non-combatant roles including being a member of the regimental band.

The two men depicted sit in their dimly lit bunk honing their respective tools of their split role as soldiers and musicians—the rifle and the musical instrument.

REMINDER 📝 Applications for Museum Leaders in Training 2026–27 are due by 8 pm on Tue, Sep 8.

🎨 M.LiT is a free, 12-week career-development and leadership-training program where teens in grades 8–12 explore museum careers and serve as advisers in the development of projects and events at VMFA.

🗣️ M.LiT participants will meet with guest lecturers and museum staff to learn team building, research, and other skills that prepare them for employment and enrich their knowledge of the professional museum field.

NOW ON VIEW 🖌️ "Painted on Paper: American Watercolors from the Permanent Collection" is on view in the Mary Ann Frable Works on Paper Gallery.

Take in 15 watercolor paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that spotlight how American watercolorists experimented and pushed the boundaries of technique and subject matter.

Over half of the featured works are new acquisitions—acquired by VMFA from 2020 onward. Several others are on display for the first time this century.
