Rafa's Gift

This 8x10 oil painting captures the purple and white bearded Iris I planted and nearly gave up on after 3 years without a bloom. I often joked that my dog Rafa, who frequently watered the plant, had doomed it. Then the next summer, the Iris gifted me with its first blossoms, filling me with unexpected joy. Since this time I have moved from that garden, and my beloved Rafa has passed. The memory has become more precious. The painting celebrates the beauty of patience, surprise, and the gifts that arrive when least expected.

Sunset Blues

I was on a ferry crossing from Minosotte Beach to Cherry Point, NC, when I photographed this sunset during the crossing. It was a perfect image for me to paint. Sunset Blues is a large painting, 36 x 48, and is hanging at Crossroads Art Center.

Unexpected Tenant

This painting captures a young opossum inside a weathered leather boot, with gentle light. While the subject may seem humble, the intention behind the piece is anything but. My work centers on the belief that animals are not background scenery in our world. they are individuals with presence and personality.
I create animal artwork because I want viewers to pause and truly see these beings. By placing animals in human contexts, I invite people to recognize them as someone, not something. This opossum, tucked into an everyday object, becomes a quiet reminder that animals experience curiosity, comfort, vulnerability, and connection just as we do.
My hope is that this painting encourages a moment of reflection, a shift in awareness, and sparks a deeper appreciation for the lives that often go unnoticed. Every piece I create is rooted in love, empathy, and the conviction that animals matter. This artwork is part of my ongoing effort to bring that truth forward through art.

303 Whitman Street

I had only done a few pen and ink house portraits when the client reached out to me. Her great-great-grandfather, Richard J. Tompkins, had built the house in 1906 in Walla Walla, Washington. She wanted a drawing of the house to give as a gift to her mother. While the house is still there and other pictures exist, the image she wanted me to work from was an old black-and-white photo taken after a big snowstorm decades ago. Studying the photograph, I knew this was going to be a big challenge for me. The more I studied the photo, the more captivated I became and was determined to make this work. After many hours in my home studio with my micron pens and a copy of the photo, I finally completed the drawing that I am still the most proud of today.
