Way back in the 2020 lockdown, I began writing a novel. I loved the excitement of being a beginner at something, of feeling freedom around a creative endeavor without the “baggage” that can come with my visual artistic practice.

As life got back to normal, I had no clue how to stay inside the world I had created. The fictional characters began to slip away into the distance. After some time, they felt like people I met at summer camp, and calling them now out of the blue would be weird and awkward. So instead, I thought of them longingly from time to time, wondering what they’ve been up to.

During that anxious yet epically spacious time, I felt so aligned with a cosmic, creative channel. But as the wise Roger Ebert once said, “The muse visits during the act of creation, not before.” So. I’ve given a little facelift to the “writing side” of my art studio. I lowered my grandpas handmade drafting desk to a comfy writing height. I’ve created a little shrine with books and objects that align with my project, a move I learned to be essential from :)

Getting back into the saddle. Inviting the muse by getting started and welcoming her when she arrives. ✨
