This custom Mizuno came in for a relace. Notice the bow in the web? Those laces were left alone and stretched under repeated impact.
The finger laces were tightened over and over to keep the players preferred shape. That took the lace past its stretch limit, and once lace can't give, the stress moves into the shell. Swipe to the last slide to see the stressed holes on the palm side of the index finger.
Proper tension isn't the tightest. It holds the shape and leaves enough give for the lace to take the load, not the leather.
