Visual Art Studio Visual Art Studio is an artist run contemporary gallery and painting/photography studio featuring cutting edge and mainstream local/national artists.

Painting, Print, Photography, Sculpture and Mixed Media Exhibitiions plus a fine art craft Boutique. Founder/Owner Anne Hart Chay is a painter and photographer who has been creating since early childhood. Her Mom taught art classes and her maternal Grandfather and Dad both had darkrooms. At 7 maybe 8 years old studio classes at the VMFA lead to visits to the Metropolitan then all she ever wanted was to have her own art studio. She did just that with her first studio for 3 years in highschool. Then there was VCU, then her studio in a non-profit and now she's on Broad Street in what was an abandoned building she tirelessly renovated. For her contributions to the neighborhood, she earned the nickname Pioneer Anne; for her art, she's known as an artist's artist. Aside from her children one of the other things she's most proud of is her work with other like minded people to develop and promote a successful First Fridays Art Walk and an Arts and Cultural District designation for her neighborhood. When Anne is not in meetings or mentoring emerging artists or bouncing ideas off crazy talented people she's wondering when she'll get more time to paint, get that to do list done, with family and friends or dreaming of visiting Italy again and making it to Greece, Egypt or a Ghost Adventure with Zac, Nick and Aaron!!!

Don’t want the 25th anniversary of the official launch of the to go by without mention. This is the 1st brochure we, 1708 gallery, the FF venues & everyone involved made. It was years of preparation, pooling our money, seeking donors, creating publicity & tons of hands on volunteering.

In Richmond, Va, 1708 Gallery is the originator of the opening receptions that occur on the First Friday of each month for new exhibitions -started in 1978 when they were located at 1708 E. Main St.

Artists knew to attend and galleries grew up around them but it wasn’t until October 5, 2001 when we collectively blocked off W. Broad St from Belvedere to N. Adams Streets, rented a stage from City of Richmond Parks and Rec. and hired Bio Ritmo to perform that everyone in the Richmond, Va area knew they were invited.

We were looking for sustainability for our businesses and it is the excitement of all you who have come out to RVA First Fridays that has revitalized our neighborhood.

Thank you and cheers to another 25 years! 🎉
