Even the most dedicated artist activist needs a recharge to balance the intensity of the times.

I was talking to a fellow sketcher recently and we both agreed how vital it is to take a break by visiting these beautiful, open spaces. It's a radical act just to care for yourself these days.

While we gear up to get back out there, remember that self-care is part of the work.

The Way to Dolores: National ICE OUT student-led protest.

I wasn't sure of the path to Dolores Park, but I didn't need a map. The throngs of young people exiting at 16th & Mission with ICE OUT signs showed the way. They moved at a pace I could barely keep up with—energized by support from honking drivers.

I overhear a young woman say, "I'm so glad we did this," and it hit me: the joy, the relief, the curiosity, the antidote to the isolation of the last year.

By 2:15 PM, the park reached its peak. Small groups had swelled into a massive force. They chanted: "Whose streets? Our streets!" as they started their move to Civic Center.

I sketched as fast as I could, trying to keep pace with their passion.

Artists: Roll out and sketch! If you are unsure how to start, come with me. I am learning as I go. Let's use all of our talents to support our young people!

It's all in the shoulders—the way they hunch and drop after hours of standing. I wanted to capture the specific weight of a day without work. The gestures of the men speak volumes about resilience and struggle.

Join a day of action tomorrow, Friday, 1/30. How are you showing up for nuestra gente? Thousands are calling for immediate change, and your voice (and your art) matters. Connect with groups like and others to find out what you can do!

Artists: Grab your sketchbooks and roll out. If you are hesitant to begin, come with me. Let's do this together ❤️ 💪.

One year. Same view. Different hiker.

In November 2024, reaching this spot at was a battle of endurance. With the help of my incredible coaches at Exhale, Rebecca, Lilly and Lea .dove, I have spent a little over one year training to improve my strength and endurance to reach higher peaks and better landscapes.

Today, that 800m vertical climb felt more fluid. While the climb hasn't changed, my strength has. Can you see the difference from then to now?

Huge shout out to the coaches at Exhale. Thanks to your guidance and encouragement, I'm not just reaching those views—I'm arriving with more energy to paint them!

I spent the afternoon walking and sketching along the perimeter road

Every step brings home the history of immigration barracks just over this ridge. It's a landscape of sadness mixed with determination and hope.

Having received my passport after a long year of uncertainty, I am reminded that the act of moving forward is its own form of defiance.
