I had an incredible learning experience at the recent two day Mary Whyte workshop hosted by Virginia Watercolor Society .

Twenty of us had the opportunity to watch Mary demonstrated two portraits while she talked us through her process, and for the first time ever, I painted from live models. What an exciting—and challenging—experience!

One of my favorite parts was meeting and painting alongside so many talented artists.

My biggest takeaway? Mary is not only an incredibly talented and dedicated artist, but also a warm, encouraging, and generous instructor who makes you want to keep learning and growing.

Mary was the juror of the 47th Annual Exhibition of the Virginia Watercolor Society at the VMFA, open now through November 1st. I encourage everyone to visit it, and if you do, make sure to cast your ballot for a People’s Choice Award.

I highly recommend her book, An Artist’s Life, as well. I had a wonderful experience learning from Mary and being inspired by her work and her journey. ❤️🎨

Sugar Magnolia blooms smell so yummy. I see them on my morning walks and always want to paint them! I am sure I have painted them before, but this one is from a dear friend’s yard down the street. I wish you could smell the sweet lemony scent of it!

I hope everyone is having a great time this weekend celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday!! Stay cool-it is a hot one!

I saw these ladies in a town square in The Villages on a recent visit and they were screaming “Paint me!” I changed their background from a golf cart filled parking lot to the canal and nixed the second stroller (which was also dressed to the nines!). If you know these old gals, let them know they’ve been immortalized!
