This is my last post as VAR's Director. Beginning tomorrow Sadiqeh Agah will start posting for VAR. If you receive and read our newsletter you know I wrote longer goodbye there. After posting over 500 posts, I can say we now have a tool to increase visibility for Richmond visual artists, without charging them a penny. Thanks to all who took advantage of this space over the years and to those who reposted our announcements! I will be around, just not as a VAR leader, so I will see you at VAR's events!

Correction: Kali Cohen will be at the Richmond Art Center on Saturday, August 15 from 11-5 pm, and not at the Richmond Museum as it was previously stated. This event is part of Richmond Open Studios.

We are very proud that three of her paintings have been chosen as part of the Joyce Gordon Teen Freeform exhibit at the The Joyce Gordon Gallery, located on 406 14th Street, in Oakland. Please join her and her grandmother on Saturday, August 8th 2026 from 2-6 pm to congratulate of our youngest VAR member!

richpoJust four more days until Richmond Open Studios begins! Tell your neighbors, tell your friends, tell your co-workers! Two weekends from 11-5 pm: Aug 8-9 for individual or paired artists, and Aug 15-16 for groups and collectives.

Don't miss the artists at our three partner venues on Aug 15: Richmond Art Center, NIAD and the Richmond Museum of History and Culture.

Samantha Kershnar (b.1979) is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Bay Area whose practice spans printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, and drawing. Kershnar often recreates human, animal, and hybrid characters from literature and film. She describes her influences: “I like making different types of art for people in my life and for myself. I like making children’s books because children inspire me. My nephew inspires me to draw things that he enjoys such as dinosaurs and animals from across the world.” In this spirit of community-building and play, her recent series of miniature ceramic dioramas function as interactive spaces. These boldly glazed “Dollhouse Rooms” are furnished with little beds, tables, and bookshelves — each scaled to match.

Celwin Plamenco (b. 2002) is an artist based in the Bay Area. Since joining NIAD Art Center in 2024, he has created a series of ceramic sculptures, folded paper sculptures, and works on paper inspired by animated film franchises, TV shows, and games. These playful scenes include precise renderings of familiar cartoon characters, often alongside or combined with figures from the artist’s own history and imagination. The result is a complex and humorous pantheon that blends fact and fiction. By inserting personally significant symbols and patterns, Plamenco claims his space in these new narratives.

Guadalupe Soto (b. 1995) is a Bay Area artist who joined NIAD Art Center in 2019. Primarily working in painting and drawing, Soto has created boldly colored works that feature repeated patterns, text, and references to pop culture. In her recent series of mixed-media detournements, she embellishes, outlines, accentuates, and alters found photographs with gold and silver ink.

Tatiana Henke (b. 1999) is a multidisciplinary artist who joined NIAD Art Center in 2025. Her practice spans drawing, poetry, and sculpture. Henke’s recent works on paper feature intricate webbed and swirling designs, which often integrate forms from the natural world like petals, leaves, storm clouds, and waves. She uses markers and ink to stripe and shade the surface in vibrant jewel tones and shocks of neon. Henke’s luminous hand-built ceramics similarly showcase her bold color sensibilities: each object is glazed with her signature marbling technique. The sculptures range from functional vessels and statement jewelry to animal effigies and abstract plaques.

In each medium, Henke evokes themes of friendship, love, joy, and pride. She explains, “Making art brings me joy because I get to draw beautiful pictures and share them with the world. Art is also therapy for me. When I draw, I feel happy and proud. I believe I was born with a gift: the gift of being an artist.”

Tatiana Henke’s work has been showcased in group exhibitions, including And yet, we must rejoice! in NIAD’s Main Gallery in Richmond, CA.

This painting is a portrait of Richmond environmental activist Keala Uchoa. It is part of a series of portraits of Richmond activists that Rebeca Garcia-Gonzalez has been slowly completing by collaborating with the activists. Of her art practice, Rebeca says: "I use representational portraiture to explore the intersection of place, identity, and social justice to document the communities that have shaped my experience as a Puerto Rican artist living in California."

Rebeca will be selling original paintings and gigleé prints at her studio on August 8, and at the Richmond Museum of History and Culture on August 15. On both days the hours are 11-5 pm.
