Apparently yesterday was National Radio Day!
My dream, from about 5 years old was to be a Radio DJ, and I am so incredibly fortunate to have achieved that back when it actually meant something!
This pic is from when I was 14 or 15, co-producing a recorded news show.
In high school, I participated in Bellevue High's radio program, and became Music Director at KASB, 89.3 FM. The station broadcast with a whopping 10 Watts, which carried the signal about a mile or so beyond the school parking lot... There was one time when the atmospheric conditions were JUST right, and I was able to tune in from home... 10 Watts wasn't a lot, and literally right next to us on the dial was...
C-89.5 FM - Seattle's legendary Dance Music Station, shoving a massive 50,000 Watts into the air, obliterating the puny 10 Watts coming from Bellevue. A few years later, I was handed the keys to that 50,000 Watt powerhouse, every Friday from 8 to Midnight, where I found my home, and the most amazing audience ever, found me. Many of them managed to find me again during my Streaming Era, which still blows my mind. What felt like a real community back in the '90s, has proven itself 30 years later!
As a final footnote to this post, just last week, I got a message through my DJ Mike Brady account, asking if I was the Mike Brady who was on C-89 back in the '90s. And yes, my mind was blown!
