I figured Id post some of my favorites from the summer and spring so far! Half of these are from a trip to the zoo, and others are from a trip to where I grew up fishing at Strawberry Reservoir down in Utah!

If you've seen from my stories lately life has been crazy bouncing from painting a mural on the weekends after I finish up at the cabinet shop, to trying to finish up some taxidermy comissions by September!

Its nice to go back and look through some of these pictures, I had no idea my love of art and wildlife would take me in the direction of photography on top of all my other hobbies! Hopefully here soon I can switch to full time art and do more of it! Here's to dreaming!

Calling this one finished! It was fun being able to focus on wildlife and landscapes this semester, and trying to focus on creating depth and details with VERY similar values (aka areas with the same level of lightness) was a really fun challenge, and one that I think helped me improve a ton!

A couple of sketches I worked on today in preparation for a couple of comissions Im working on! Im excited to get these transferred and start painting, it'll be a little 11x14 portrait of my client and his dad, plus his earliest trophies, after one of his first successful hunts!

Im hoping to do a lot more of these in the future, as well as other smaller sized paintings for anyone who wants one! 😁

When you do the math and find out that you've been doing 70+ hour weeks between work, school, homework, and travel, and THEN enter a local show and watch blue squares, triangles, and squiggles win all the awards, you get a little bit frustrated!

Thats what happened just recently, and before anyone says anything, I am very happy for my fellow artists that won those awards. But man am I exhausted, and I was hoping for what I thought would be a big step forward.

But thats where I went wrong! I dont need awards or honors to be happy with where I am, and the fact that I can create something like this in 2(ish) days even with that schedule is a massive blessing. So if you're like me and you feel a little stuck, just keep on going, you'll make it out the other side soon!

Painting large scale has been super fun, but I find that its nice to go back to something little like this.

I had started this piece a little bit ago and just got caught up in school, work, and the dad life that it really fell to the back burner, and that burner was turned off and ice cold 😅

So I sat down for about 3 hours today and got it to this point! Ive still got some things to adjust and change, maybe even add in the next little bit, but Im VERY happy with how this one is coming along!!

I always find it tough posting my paintings, colors never match the in person ones, values are flattened, and it just never looks the same. So today I stepped back and took a picture just to see what it would look like, and whaddaya know, it looks pretty similar to in person!

Obviously its still not perfect, and I have yet to figure out just how to take these pictures well, but I am most definitely still learning!

This is my second entry into my dying light series, a black bear placed into a fun landscape that I took where the Teton Dam used to be. I had fun working on this one and just messing around with values and colors from the original photo!

I told my wife while taking these "we better be careful with this photography stuff, I could get hooked on this!"

Needless to say I've got another lens in the mail and lots more trips out to Yellowstone planned! Figured I'd post some of my favorites that I got out there over this last weekend.

We saw lots of animals, from bull elk just starting their antler growth for the year, to a couple hundred bison taking naps just off the road. Those as well as all sorts of baby animals everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE. Hopefully in the future I won't spook the coyotes that were creeping up along the river to see what was going on!

Figured I'd take a minute and go back in time with some sketches. The first one is what I did today with what little time ive had in the midst of moving and being a dad! From there, it goes back slowly to when I started my time at college down in Utah as an illustration major and even a little before that to my time as a missionary for my faith.

I never thought I'd fall in love with painting like I have, but man am I sure glad I did! Paint let's me express myself and my thoughts/opinions in a way that drawing never would!

Just a warning, if youre driving through warm river area during early spring, be careful! When me and my wife went up a few weeks ago to walk around we were met with probably a hundred deer standing eother just off the road, or right in the middle of it. We even had a big cow moose cross the road maybe 20 feet in front of us.

I love being up in the mountains, away from work, school, and people in general. Its where my thoughts are clearest, and my problems are the lightest. Im doing 3 paintings similar to this mood, and I think Im gonna call the mini series "dying light". This one's a 24x36 oil on canvas.

Had a fun time working on this one, and Im excited for the next! Paintings like this help connect me to the places I love the most, even when my whole world is crazy and I can't be in them for real!
