Gloria’s use of pattern and reference to place exists as an ongoing pattern of internal processing as someone who has had many homes. Interested in how our relationship to place changes through time, distance, and reconstructed memory, she uses cut and reassembled prints to examine spaces
between presence and absence, proximity and distance, remembering and forgetting.

Surface design is a lifelong passion for artist Maryamm Abdullah. Trained as a textile designer and ceramicist, visual texture and patternmaking are important elements of her work. The resulting clay works are inspired by the colorful geometric tiles and complex carved plaster archways architecture found in Alhambra, the palatine city in Grenada, Spain.

We are pleased to present a two-person exhibition of work by Maryland-based artists Maryamm Abdullah and Gloria Ann Shows. The exhibition explores the use of pattern to evoke a sense of place across the distinct mediums of ceramics and printmaking.

Closing Saturday, June 6 ✨ترحال / Nomadism, a solo-exhibition by Northern Virginia-based, Syrian artist work reimagines Arabic calligraphy as a deeply personal and contemporary visual language.

Tephra ICA at Signature, located at the Signature apartment building (11850 Freedom Dr, Reston, VA). Visitors are welcome Wednesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm. Free and open to the public.

Tephra ICA at Signature is provided in partnership with Sterling Investors and Simpson Housing, and generously sponsored by Reston Community Center.

Join Tephra ICA as we continue to explore contemporary art in the DMV. Visit five artist studios at the historic Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA with Tephra ICA Board Member and artist Ann Barbieri, followed by a visit to Alicia Eggert’s Now or Never public installation in nearby Waterfront Park. Light refreshments provided.

Abdulrahman Naanseh work reimagines Arabic calligraphy. Rooted in classical traditions passed down by his father, a self-taught calligrapher, Naanseh’s evolving practice bridges the literary, linguistic, and visual, exploring the complex relationships between experience, identity, and ideas of home.
