Danni O'Brien: Cross Sections
On view through October 11, 2022
Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art
Reston, Virginia
tephraica.org

“I conceive of the works in a haphazard way, a quick, intuitive gathering and selection of the diagrams and found objects that initiate each piece. Then I spend months carefully contending with what I have laid out in a slow and meditative process, often resulting in a clash with my previous self.” -Danni O’Brien

For this exhibition of new work, Baltimore-based interdisciplinary artist Danni O’Brien (she/they) has built each artwork around a borrowed instructional diagram, carefully stripping away its original function and context. O’Brien uses the act of decontextualization deliberately, creating wall-hung constructions that are rich with connotation. Within the visceral surfaces and quasi-bodily forms, the compositional logic of systems and mechanisms prevail.

Mother Line

Reston, Virginia

Laurel Nakadate (American, b. 1975) creates work that examines contemporary modes of self-representation and identity formation. Exploring loneliness and relationships amongst strangers, her practice predates, yet foreshadows, the onslaught of social media platforms that pervade our everyday lives, including Instagram and Facebook, freelance marketplaces like fiverr and Upwork, and consumer genetic testing services such as 23andMe. "Mother Line" presents two series, Relations and The Kingdom, which result directly from the artist embracing such platforms.

Join us for a special Creative Response program on Thursday, April 14 at 1:30pm, featuring Imogen-Blue Hinojosa, a contemporary artist known for performance, video, and photography, in response to the exhibition Laurel Nakadate: Mother Line, currently on view at Tephra ICA.

For this afternoon program, Hinojosa will perform her text Dreaming at the Edges of a Petrol Blue Room live from her bedroom in Berlin. The text begins under the same circumstances as Nakadate’s Relations series – the meeting of two people, at an agreed upon location, for a brief exchange. Hinojosa’s work lays bare the experiences of trans women in survival s*x work situations, and draws upon anecdotal experiences of her community, manifesting in a private performance of prose and poetry.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A. Free and open to the public. RSVP in advance at [email protected] for Zoom Room link and password. This program is sponsored by Reston Community Center.

Borrowed and Not Returned
On view through June 28, 2022
Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art
Reston, Virginia
tephraica.org

"Borrowed and Not Returned" includes three recent and ongoing series by artist Travis Childers. Childers’ work is concerned with our society’s extractive relationship to nature, though he often approaches the topic with humor and a healthy dose of culpability as he acknowledges his own participation. In his new "Story Tellers" series, Childers employs miniature, model railroad materials to create landscapes that, despite their small size, imply the depth of the earth and the boundlessness of the sky. In contrast, Childers' collage work in the Vegetation series presents opaque facades and coverings that create expansive fields of borrowed images.

Altered and constructed landscapes serve as anchors across Childers’ work, creating a common thread between a wide variety of human experiences. Underlying his practice is the sensibility that in our human relationship to landscape, there is something borrowed and not returned.

One more week remains to check out Andrea Limauro: A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats currently on view at the Tephra ICA at Signature gallery.

Andrea Limauro is a visual artist and city planner whose work explores migration and migrant identity issues, nationalistic narratives, gun violence, climate change, and other social topics. Through his attentive and laborious process of screen printing and careful painting, Limauro’s works bring into focus the looming nature of disasters due to the effects of climate change. By employing striking color combinations, metal leaf, and patterns, he creates an illusion to a dystopian future of the DC region.

Tephra ICA at Signature is located at the Signature apartment building in Reston, VA. Provided in partnership with Boston Properties and Bozzuto. Generously supported by Reston Community Center.

Visitors are welcome Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm. Face masks are required to enter. Reservations are not required.

This Giving Tuesday, please consider Tephra ICA and our Annual Giving Campaign, supporting one of the most critical areas, general operations. Visit https://www.tephraica.org/join-give to donate today.

The campaign directly supports Tephra ICA’s vision to deepen our impact nationally, reach new audiences, and continue to advance as a leading contemporary art institution. This past year, Tephra ICA has made significant strides in delivering this vision, including:

- Presenting the exhibition Quantum Shift, featuring light and space artist Gisela Colón, and the accompanying public sculpture, Parabolic Monolith Iridium, located at James Monroe Park in Washington, DC. Both projects were reviewed by The Washington Post.

- Buoyant Force, by artist Sue Wrbican, remains in Reston Town Square Park and is the focal point of this year’s Emerging Visions program where we work with Fairfax County Public Schools to develop art curriculum for K-12 students.

- We also look forward to continuing to build institutional partnerships, such as the forthcoming exhibition featuring photographer, filmmaker, video and performance artist, Laurel Nakadate, in conjunction with George Mason University.

We appreciate you and those who are willing to make commitments to Tephra ICA during this moment. Any gift of any size will help sustain Tephra ICA's mission to promote innovative contemporary art and thinking.

Thank you for considering the arts and supporting Tephra ICA.
