Carco Theatre

Carco Theatre For more than 40 years, Carco Theatre has served as a performance venue in the Puget Sound area. In fact, Carco derives its name from Paccar.
(45)

Carco Theatre was built in Cedar River Park in 1971 by the City of Renton with significant financial support from the Paccar (Pacific Car and Foundry Company) Foundation. The original vision for the theatre was to “serve as a center for many community oriented projects from band concerts, dance programs, road shows, and performing arts presentations to public meetings, lecture series. flower shows

and community forums.” Except for the flower shows, the vision remains the same to this day. Possibly the most interesting element of the theatre itself is its 3500sf stage with nearly as much floorspace thrust into the audience as there is behind the proscenium opening. This creates a versatile venue that allows for small, intimate performances to work just as well as grand productions with large casts and lots of movement. The space was also designed with such excellent acoustics that a polite conversation could be held between the stage and the back row without the need for amplification. The lighting equipment has been improved over the years from a few pars in two areas to a full complement of fixtures and electrics throughout the space. As technology has progressed in the last decade, however, Carco has plans to upgrade its equipment to include more LED fixtures and moving lights. The Occupants
The theatre was owned and managed by the City of Renton, who rented to a variety of community groups, primary of which was the Valley Community Players who occupied Carco Theatre for nearly 40 years until the great recession drove them out of business. From 2010 to 2013, the City of Renton managed the space, but when it was realized that the City was loosing tens of thousands of dollars each year, they decided to rent the theatre to a non-profit management company. Puget Sound Access, a public access channel at that time located in a large warehouse in Kent, signed a lease with the City of Renton. After two years of sub-par management of the theatre, the City urged Puget Sound Access to step up their game, so they hired a consultant who hired the current management team. We are each seasoned professionals, experts in our fields, with dedication to customer service and an entrepreneurial spirit that drives us to find the best in ourselves and in every situation. Our intention is not to diverge from the original vision, but rather to improve the way we care for the building and serve the community. To that end, we have pursued programs and partnerships in the following areas: Children’s programs, whether by or for children; Independent Film and Video; and Multi-Cultural and Diverse Populations.

On display this month in Carco's lobby is the work of Alex Sylvester. Come check out his work during office hours or if you come to a show! Prints and originals are available.

Bio:
Alex Sylvester is a Washington based artist with a varied history in practices and mediums. Originally focused as a filmmaker up and through his late 20's, he began to experiment with other forms of expression between photography tinted with digital manipulation/glitches as well as drawing in traditional mediums, primarily ink and colored pencil. Inspired primarily by a wide array of music, contemporary visual artists and a dash of psychedelia, Alex's art aims to express and inspire the individuals introspective journey.
Artist Statement:
I feel very connected to my art and the process that comes with it. I am someone who spends a lot of time in his own head, poking and prodding at my thoughts, emotions and the space between. In light of this, I've always needed some sort of conduit for expression, and acts of artistic creation became the most powerful and effective way to fill that need. Drawing in particular has taken the drivers seat in recent years as I've really began to delve into a stream-of-consciousness like approach; allowing ideas to sort of spill out until they can mature and be full realized. I'm as well a big fan of experimentation and pushing boundaries, which is what lead me on this path in the first place. Ultimately, through my own personal journey and experiences, I hope to connect to other humans in a way that may be as healing as it was for myself when creating the art.

Congratulations to Carco Theatre, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year! The theater was dedicated on February 19, 1971, as the first phase of the set of community amenities--Renton Community Center and Henry Moses Aquatic Center--we enjoy today. In this photo, architect Roger Richert hands off the ceremonial key to (L-R) Mayor Avery Garrett, former Mayor Don Custer, and Paul Piggott, President of the Pacific Car & Foundry Co. that provided a $100,000 grant to get the theater built. Carco's name memorializes that contribution.
