Michael Sarich was born in Chicago Illinois in 1955, the year Disney
Land was opened. He now lives in Verdi, Nevada, where he has taught as an Associate Professor of Painting & Drawing at the University of Nevada since 1989. He has received multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from Northern Illinois
University, and a Master of Fine Arts in drawing, painting, and
sculpture from the University of Oklahoma. He also attended the
College of Salzburg in Austria to study printmaking.
Sarich is an interdisciplinary artist who works in printmaking,
painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Influenced by outsider art,
graffiti, and tattoo flash, his practice engages a complex relationship between his personal iconography and pop culture imagery. In each body of work, sarich weaves together intricate allegories that
couple personal icons like propellers, family tokens and fish with highly commercialized imagery like the smiley face, La Virgen de
Guadalupe.
By using universal images, Michael Sarich’s art feels familiar and
easily relatable. My favorite things about his work, and something
that makes his work truly unique is his use of contrast, his color
pallet, and his personal style of mark making.
