Uncovering that perfect artwork can be a wonderful feeling.
Brushing off the dust that covers each stroke of paint to unveil a wonderful art piece, it's something special. The next step, however, is where the fun really begins.
Picking the perfect frame for your newly-found artwork can be an exciting task, but also a daunting one. Knowing exactly what you need may not always be so obvious, so here are a few pointers when selecting that perfect frame.
Make sure the frame matches your artwork's aesthetic. If you have a natural scene, try to find a frame with natural grain patterns or a natural tone. If you have an abstract scene, look to giving your frame a more minimalistic edge. If your artwork is of someone, look towards adding an ornate frame to add a bit of elegance to the artwork.
Match color tones when possible, or look towards complimentary colors for contrast. If you want your frame to be an extension of your artwork, try matching the color tone of your frame with the tones inside of the image. If you want your frame to highlight the image while also standing out, look towards a complimentary color. If you want to express elegance or class with your artwork, look towards a black, silver, or gold frame.
Finally, make sure the frame's size does not dominate the artwork. The frame's sizing will ultimately depend on the size of your artwork. You don't want to have a 2" wide moulding for an artwork that is 5" x 7" since the size of the frame will be competing with the size of the artwork. Alternatively, you may want to stray away from a 1/2" moulding for an artwork that is 20" x 24" if you want the moulding to have some weight (unless you are going for minimalist-style framing).
