Collateral & Co. returns TODAY, July 17, to for a multi-disciplinary, evening-length dance work that examines the fragile and ephemeral nature of life through the presence and experience of the endangered monarch butterfly. “Fragments of Existence,” follows the butterfly’s remarkable metamorphosis – its delicate appearance, the threat to its survival, and its graceful, impermanent existence – as a mirror to explore human transience, the passage of time, and our own vulnerability within the larger web of human life.

Meet Dance Artist Deena Schmidt | Deena grew up in Minneapolis, MN, training at Summit School of Dance, Ballet Arts Minnesota, Boston Conservatory, University of Akron (B.S. in Mathematics, minors in Dance and Biology), and Cornell University (M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Math). While a graduate student, she was a Principal Dancer with the Ithaca Ballet Company, dancing lead roles in The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland to name a few. Deena has danced with various other companies across the US including Metropolitan Ballet in Minneapolis, MN, Xclaim Dance Company in Columbus, OH and .v.a.ballettheatre , , .contempory.dance.co and here in Reno.

Meet Founder and Artistic Director Caitlin Bell | Born and raised in Reno, NV, Caitlin Bell (McCarty) is a writer, dance teacher, and choreographer who has spent much of her young life creating throughout the Reno community. Caitlin began her dance training in classical ballet at The Conservatory of Movement and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a B.A. in English Writing and a minor in Dance.While at the University, Caitlin was honored to dance in works by Cari Cunningham and Rosie Trump and Guest Artist work by Kathleen Hermesdorf and Andrea Miller. Caitlin received the College of Liberal Arts, Dean’s Award for Performance and Artistry upon the conferral of her undergraduate degree.

After graduation, Caitlin moved to New York City where she worked as an Associate for Gallim Dance overseeing the company’s education program, touring, development and much more. Caitlin is a freelance writer and contributor to Dance Magazine’s online publication. Caitlin is passionate about the intersection of literacy and dance and employs poetry and prose in her choreographic work and teaching strategies. Bell currently dances for bellē contemporary dance co. under the direction of Cari Cunningham.

Caitlin graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in December 2021 with a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship.

Meet Dance Artist Cassidy Ratanakul | Born in Hawaii and raised in Las Vegas, Cassidy is a mother of two and a high school math teacher who is passionate about education and the arts. She attended a performing arts high school and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s in Equity and Diversity from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 2020, Cassidy joined Collateral and Co., where she continues to explore her love for dance and storytelling through movement.

Meet Dance Artist Andrew Paiz | Andrew is a local dancer, choreographer, and teacher who has danced in works set by esteemed choreographers such as Rosie Herrera and Shinichi Iova-Koga, as well as local choreographers Nate Hodges, Maggie Stack, and Rosie Trump. He has had his own choreography presented at events including Reno Dance Festival, the American College Dance Association regional conference in Utah, and Northern Nevada Pride. Currently, he is a company member of local tap dance company The Dapper Tappers, co-directs the local contemporary-based group Convergence Dance Collective, and choreographs for Truckee Meadows Community College dance shows.
