17 years ago today, we lost Patrick Swayze.

In 1995, Swayze stepped outside the macho leading-man image Hollywood had built around him to play drag queen Vida Boheme in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

He initially expected the role to be fun and outrageous. But as he worked on Vida, he realized a caricature wouldn’t work. “She had to be real.” He found her through what he described as her love, compassion, and nurturing spirit. Years later, he called playing Vida “the most emotional thing in my entire career.”

Swayze said Vida represented “every drag queen on the planet or anyone who has been misunderstood,” and spoke about the courage it took to live openly despite the possibility of rejection.

That same year, he reflected on his own self-image. “I've now ceased to worry about image, because I don't care what people think of me anymore. Because I've had such a battle with what I think of me and with trying to find a way to like myself.”

For an actor who had become one of Hollywood’s quintessential masculine heartthrobs, there’s something especially meaningful about how deeply he embraced Vida. Years later, he remained proud of the role, writing simply: “I loved Vida, and even missed her a little bit when she was gone.”

Patrick Swayze died on September 14, 2009, at just 57. Today, we’re remembering a heartthrob who wasn’t afraid to challenge what a heartthrob was supposed to look like.

He is pictured here at his California home in a photo taken by Mary Ellen Mark in 1995, the same year he starred as drag queen Vida Boheme in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.
