Today is 🎨🖌️ we're so honored to see how many people have connected with Van Gogh's work in an entirely new way.

His letters to his brother, Theo, offer a rarely-seen window into his psyche. A thoughtful and pensive man, he often wrote about his hopes, dreams and plans for a brighter future. We know he'd be pleasantly surprised at the level of worldwide fame he's been able to achieve since his death.

Van Gogh's struggles and hardships are well-documented, but Beyond Van Gogh seeks to shine new light on his story and highlight the amazing man (and artist) he was.

Van Gogh began his work as an artist in a darker tone and different style than he is commonly known for. Once he got to Paris his pieces became brighter and more lively - a testament to his improving mood and outlook. However, it wasn't until he got to the south of France did we see an explosion of color and vivid brushstrokes - morphing into his instantly recognizable style.

Vincent's first vocational goal was to follow in his father's footsteps and become a preacher. In 1879 he began his career as an evangelist in Belgium and quickly realized that in order to engage the coal workers who lived in the town, he would need to become one of them. He decided to follow the scripture - he moved into a hut and slept on a straw mattress, giving away his money, food and clothes to the needy.

The Committee for the Evangelical Protestant Churches were not impressed with Van Gogh's dedication to the gospel, instead seeing it as excessive and too extreme. The Committee withdrew its support and rejected Van Gogh, dismissing him from both the Borinage and the church itself.

Spiritually, emotionally and physically exhausted, he took up a pencil and began to sketch - the rest is history!
