A three day walk through the English countryside from London to Canterbury is the crux of Ian Hawkins’ funny and touching one person show, THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS WHY NOT.

An acclaimed storyteller and stand up comedian, Ian has appeared across the UK, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and as part of The Moth storytelling hour. Clear Space is thrilled to present the AMERICAN PREMIERE of his show WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2 AT 7:30PM as part of our summer cabaret series.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Following in the footsteps of kings, paupers, and pilgrims, Ian takes the audience on a quest without a cause as he tried to find an answer to why he’s hiking through a heatwave and a thunderstorm, encountering failures, ghosts, and the kindness of strangers along the way. His story and the footpath’s history intertwine as he looks back on a life that’s been far from ordinary and tries to answer the question: what motivates us to do difficult things?

ABOUT THE PLAY
Dale, a sixteen-year-old boy burdened with a gruesome past and a guilty secret, hits the road to New Orleans with the financial assistance of Cat, a twenty-six-year old gas station attendant that suffers from fits of seizures and a dark secret of her own. They struggle to connect as both lovers and friends while their most private memories play out like movies before them, exposing a sordid history of violence and fear that has left them incapable of traditional romance.

During our 23rd year in Coastal Delaware, Clear Space continues to expand the variety of our offerings to introduce you to the best of what’s new and to celebrate cherished classics. In addition to our mainstage series and our Spotlight on Young Performers series at our home on Baltimore Avenue, this year we launch a new satellite black box series in the Elkins-Archibald Atrium at CAMP Rehoboth. Subscribe to one, two, or all three of these series and be guaranteed your spot at the hottest ticket in town.

There are so many adventures to choose across the season. No matter the journey audiences take with us in 2027, we hope their experience will help us all continue to find our way to that feeling of home: to warmth and laughter, to meaningful conversations, and to a richer sense of the potential for live theater to shape our world for the better.

Current subscribers will receive their renewal invoices starting on September 8, 2026. If you’re interested in becoming a subscriber for the first time, click here to sign up to get first notice for when new subscriptions go on sale in early October. Single tickets for Perfect Arrangement and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill go on sale December 1, 2026, and single tickets for the full season will be available starting January 11, 2027.
