Been noodling with this one for a while and just decided to wrap it up. I love Mortal Kombat. I haven't seen the latest movie, but I hope to catch it this weekend. Their interpretation of the characters has been really fun and I love what they did with Scorpion. And the cast is excellent. Was going to draw him throwing his weapon, but I just needed to get this one done.

Finished the second volume of How to Survive Camping by Bonnie Quinn. A great follow up to the first book. More emotional, to me, than the first while still maintaining the dark and funny tone. Really looking forward to the next one. Bookmark was found on Etsy. Thought it matched nicely.

Here's the books I recently picked up. Can't wait to dig in to these. I have one more I'm going to pick up from a different local bookstore that is holding it for me. Yes, I'm definitely on a spooky kick right now and probably forever.

This isn't a facet of age as much as recognizing how valuable time is: I've come to dislike technology. I know, I'm typing this on a computer, but I can't write you all a letter. The experience of using tech is curated by people who need to profit from it, so your needs inherently become secondary. When you break away from tech as much as you can, you are able to curate your needs better. When I read a book, I don't have to sit through ads that become increasingly harder to skip. When I share art in person, in a gallery, I don't worry about whether an algorithm is steering people away from it. And I think the businesses recognize this and strive to make us more dependent on tech. We used to be just fine without smart phones and now most of us can't live without one. New generations are being dumbed down by AI causing them to become ever more dependent on tech. Attention spans shrink. Critical thinking shrinks. When they curate what we see, they can control our opinions. Want us to believe that something false is true? Only put things that reinforce that belief into our feeds. Want to make us pay monthly fees for content? Trick us into believing it's easier and then raise prices. I'm not saying we shouldn't use these things. Just that, if we want happiness, we need to use these things in a way that actually serves us and we can't depend on them. Conservatives talk about how socialism is bad because when the government controls everything we are victims to their will. But the irony of that thought process is that private businesses are seeking to control our lives and make us victims to their will. It's maddening to watch. Even more maddening to live in it. Everyone, take care of yourselves, and don't let yourself become beholden to the will of others

A blast from the past. Thankfully, he has a time machine. I'm not even going to do the mental math to figure out how long ago I did this piece but it's fair to say it's a long time ago. I did this piece in a big to get a shot to draw the Doctor Who comics. I did get to, eventually, so it worked out. But more than the piece winning me the gig, it was the support of all the Whovians out there who kept me motivated. I will always love that community.

This piece came from a suggestion online that I loved. I've NEVER draw Etrigan before, which is crazy, so I was really hyped to take a crack at this one. Goes to show that if you have a good suggestions, I'm always listening. Etrigan is one of Kirby's coolest characters, in my opinion, and shows just how well read the King was. He drew inspiration from everything and we are all blessed by the universes he built for us.

Here's the Cyclops sketch from yesterday's time-lapse. This was a really fun piece to do and getting to use the time-lapse feature to animate Cyclops optic blasts was a fun experiment. If you haven't seen it, check out yesterday's post. Really proud of it.

Call me uncool, but I always preferred Cyclops over Wolverine. Sure, there's lots to love about Logan, but I found Scott Summers to be such an interesting character. Apart from having cool powers, I thought the psychology behind the character allowed for so much great storytelling.

Here's a still of the Batman time-lapse from yesterday. Actually quite happy with how this one turned out. Going to take some of these techniques further in upcoming pieces.

Getting myself back on track this year with some more frequent sketching to share. Am I tired of drawing Batman? Never. He will always be my favorite to sketch, the shadows, the contrast, and an iconic look. Are there characters you'd like to see me sketch? Let me know. I'm always open to suggestions.
