The Cañada College Department of Theater Arts presents The Late Wedding, by Obie Award winning local playwright Christopher Chen, directed by guest artist, Michele Apriña Leavy. Chen, a Bay Area native, takes his cue from the sly writings of Italian fabulist author, Italo Calvino. His winking second person narrative and meta-theatricality are delivered by a seven-person shape-shifting cast of Cañada students, who guide you on a wild and delightful examination of love and longing.

At once an anthropological tour through marriage customs, a spy thriller, and a sci-fi love story, the only thing you can expect from the inventive, mind-bending The Late Wedding is the unexpected! Originally commissioned in by San Francisco’s Crowded Fire Theater Company, the play had its premiere with company in 2014. Since then, it has been produced at various colleges and theater companies across the country. This production marks the play’s fifth anniversary of its premiere.

The cast includes: Pierre Alexander, Keith Becker, Lilian Cheng, David Fitzpatrick, Luka Mehrling, Sarah Rodriguez-Soto, and Danielle Vandyke.

Run time is about 60 minutes.

Tickets available at the door 30 minutes before show time.

Our Spring show opens next week!

We here in the Theatre Arts Department are spending these glorious spring days in the Flex Theatre rehearsing long hours in preparation for opening night of our Spring 2017 production: "Acting on Impulse: Plays With A Twist."

"Acting on Impulse" is a mostly student-written one-act festival* (I wrote one of the plays), and we open next Tuesday, 3/21, and run through Sunday 3/26.

This is a mostly fun and fast-paced comedy, with a few beautifully darker pieces woven throughout. Great for adults, maybe not so great for kids - there's strong language and sexual content. Nothing too shocking, but maybe get a babysitter for kids under 16 or so.

Tuesday, 3/21 11:10am (Student Matinee, Donation Only)
Wednesday, 3/22 2:00pm (Student Matinee, Donation Only)
Thursday, 3/23 12:45pm (Student Matinee, Donation Only)
Friday, 3/24 8:00pm
Saturday, 3/25 8:00pm
Sunday, 3/26 2:00pm

Hope to see you at the theatre!

Attention former and current Theatre Arts Students: we are still looking for scripts written by students and alumni to produce in our Student One Act Festival this semester!

Scripts must be about 10-15 pages, of any genre or subject. Rough drafts are welcome as long as you're available to revise (with feedback from myself and the cast) within the next few weeks.

Please email all scripts and inquiries to Anna Budd at [email protected]. Hope to hear from you!

This is what my colleagues are saying about "Almost, Maine!"

*

Almost, Maine is a hit!!! With moving performances by an incredible cast, exquisite sets and lighting by Mike Walsh, plus Anna Budd’s flair for guiding actors to discover themselves through the arts program at Cañada, this charming and insightful play provides a romantic experience which takes you into the lives of a wonderful, colorful community in Maine.

Here is what the critics are saying:

“A must see! It will make you laugh as well as tug at your heartstrings. Sweet, poignant and witty with outstanding performances by the entire cast. Don't miss this exceptional show.”
Joan Murphy

“It made me laugh (more than the current contract negotiations), it made me cry (more than reading midterm essays), and it touched my Pointillist heart (inside joke)!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Denise Erickson, Art History

"Almost Maine" illustrates the core human needs of love, connection, and humor, which are largely missing in our current political discourse. To me the mark of a great performance is when I can't stop thinking about it afterwards, and this show is one of those. Go! Laugh! Cry! And be reassured that humans are mostly good people who care for one another . . . at least the humans who live in Almost, Maine.
Lisa K. Palmer, PhD, Professor of English

Any more critics who have seen this theatrical treasure are invited to contribute their reviews to share!

Three more performances: Don’t miss it!
