Something special happened on Saturday. Dr Nadeeka Rathnayake, judge of the inaugural Creatives Inc Art Award, announced her decision. I loved hearing about her judging process and how she rigorously and care-fully adhered to the criteria.
I was so surprised when Dr Rathnayake announced my name as a finalist. I am proud to share that honour with 4 other talented artists, Paul Harris, Juniper Sikora, Brett Leavy and Little Water Bear.
I celebrate Renata Buziak, the award winner, for her beautiful cyanotype, “Threshold Waters — Where Fresh Meets Salt” - and for her work more broadly to reconnect people with nature through art and science. My congratulations to you!
To inform my creation of paintings for the show, I explored a way of listening to water as a sentient being, aiming to de-centre the human-centric and Western-centric ways of listening. The process took me on a journey across history, culture, and relationships tied to the Kombumerri country upon which I live - which was once The Great Swamp. LMK if you want to hear more, I’d love to share.
Thank you to Nicola for taking this photo of us. Paul Harris, I was thinking of you in your absence!
I care deeply about the show’s aim to inspire environmental consciousness, community dialogue, and action towards a more sustainable and flourishing future for South East Queensland. So, it is an honour to have 5 of my artworks juried in alongside the work of 27 talented artists, across three venues. Big thanks to GC Creative Events for the opportunity, including Karleen's curatorial vision and nourishment.
(BTW the art in the show is for sale!)
While Aqua Limina has finished at Robina, the show continues at Hand Bent Banana and The HIVE Art Gallery… will I see you at the grand finale and people’s choice award this Friday?
