Join us on Saturday October 3rd at Artlands Downtown Redlands, from 6-9pm for the opening of our new show for October “Stolen” featuring works by Guy Denning!

The opening is part of First Saturdays Downtown Redlands, a night of art and music in downtown Redlands. A collaboration between Artlands Downtown Redlands, à la minute, Viva La Boba 🧋, and Retro Vintage Thrift Estate 🍊 with more to be announced in the coming months. First Saturdays is a program of The Artlands Creative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Guy Denning was born in North Somerset, UK in 1965. He has been obsessed with visual art since childhood and started painting in oils at the age of eleven.

Since he grew up in a Somerset village outside Bristol and saw the local rural economy crumble throughout the 1980s, he has been interested in responding to society in one type of political narrative or another.
With his discovery in 1980 of the bands CRASS, The Dead Kennedys and Poison Girls, Denning associated himself with the second wave of punk and saw the light in terms of street art. Following the stenciled text aesthetic and anarchist politics of the band CRASS, and the photo-montage vision of artist Gee Vaucher, Denning started peppering west-country towns with his particular paste-up style and sometimes surreal political messaging.

With his painting Denning uses not only powerful brush strokes to express himself but also scratches and tears the paint and surface to an extent where he has had to crudely stitch it back together. He frequently adds stenciled and collaged text to oil paintings. He has been invited to work on a variety of community urban art projects where he has developed a distinctive style that builds images from drawing and text.

His work is held in several other public collections, including the Politics Department of Bristol University, the Political Science Department at Galway University, the MAGI’900 Museum of Contemporary Art, Bologna and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest.
Since 2007 Guy Denning has lived, and continues to work, in Finistere, France.

NEW DATE! Join us on Thursday September 24th from 10am-noon at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve! Join us for “Experiments In Chromesthesia: Sensory Translations Into Color” with Colleena Hake (Colleena Hake), our last The Artlands Creative workshop of the year!

Colleena will be teaching a workshop called “Experimental Chromesthesia” in both American Sign Language and verbal English. She is curious about how senses can be enhanced in new ways, like hearing color or visualizing touch. Using dry-erase boards & sharpies provided, participants will be asked to translate birdsong, tree textures, etc. into art. Colleena founded La Matadora Gallery in 2017 in Joshua Tree, and previously owned a gallery in Tucson, AZ for 3 years. She studied art history in London, and wrote her Master’s thesis on Catharsis in Performance Art. One of her hidden talents is reading music and playing piano; her favorite is Beethoven, with whom she shares the same birthday and quality of deafness. She recently self-published another book of her cabin blessings + poems called “Firehorse Beneditos.”

Join us for Youth Climate Coalition Roundtable – Art + Action for Climate Justice!

California Environmental Voters is building a Youth Climate Coalition for the Riverside County and Inland Empire region, and this roundtable is part of that effort. We’re inviting young people ages 18–30 to a free in-person session where we’ll turn ideas into collective visual action. This will be a space to create, connect, and build community with others who care about climate justice in the Inland Empire. We’ll also be joined by climate activist Andrea Galvan (Andrea Galván) for a special presentation!

Here’s what to expect:
• Connect with familiar faces and welcome newcomers
• Learn about the Youth Climate Coalition and how to get involved
• Explore how art and visual tools can support climate advocacy in the Inland Empire
• Create posters with climate justice messages
• Sign a petition in support of the development and passage of the Youth Climate Board in Riverside County

Today marks the five year anniversary of our crosswalk mural on Vine St in downtown Redlands! A significant milestone considering the paint on a road mural is expected to last from 3-5 years. Designed and painted by the collective Pulp Press (sofia diaz, Jillian Sander, and Bridget Bilbo), this mural is significant because it is the first public art piece in our entire area to center the LGBTQ community and also the diversity in the Redlands community. It is also the very first asphalt art piece on a public street in Redlands history!

For those of you that may not remember, this was a heavy lift to get this mural green-lit by the city. It faced lots of backlash about not only the message, but claims that it would be dangerous, a big distraction, and would cause car accidents. None of this has come true. Although we do notice more people actually using the crosswalk. This was only possible due to the support of the community who came to city council meetings, donated, and spread the word! Also, due to the support of Southern California Association of Governments/Go Human SoCal who awarded the project a grant through their community streets program, the Redlands Cultural Arts Commission, and our city council members, specifically DeniseDavisforRedlands who helped champion it, as well as Jenna Guzman-Lowery, Paul Barich who supported it.

Huge thanks to those in the city that support the arts! We’re still here, still pushing forward, still a thorn in the side to those that want to hold us back, and can still use your support (donate at the link in our bio 😜).
