Star Wars: The Last Jedi A-

Cantinflas: B+. The film tries to span the entire acting career of its titular character while simultaneously telling the story of the film "Around the World in 80 Days." It almost accomplishes both with ease. There was plenty of fat that could be trimmed but it pulls itself together without losing too much momentum. Solid rental with a glass of wine.

Guardians of the Galaxy: A. Funniest and most carefree of the Marvel summer tent poles so far. Teasing great characters at the end of the credits as well. These movies are getting to be love letters to comic fans. I for one think it's about time. Love this movie too. Go support good cinema.

(Exclusive preview review)

Expendables 3: B-. Imagine a world where every 80's and 90's action film star was given tons of one liners dripping with testosterone to wrap around a paper thin revenge plot. Antonio Banderas is the comic relief, Arnold yells about choppers no less than four times, and Jason Statham is at least not horrible. Don't get me wrong, the film is bad. For me it may be so bad that it reaches cult status. If you are looking for a burst if self deprecating, hyper masculine, silly action then go watch this in theaters.

Safe: D. Further proof that a Jason Statham movie without a car just doesn't fly. Someone send this guy a memo. Skip it, unless your a huge Statham fan.

Red Dawn: F. If you're going to spoil the premise of the film on the poster the action better be top notch. It is not. The story is bland and predictable. You can tell who will live and die by the way the characters are introduced in the film. This. Film. Is. Dumb. Skip it.

Godzilla: D. The premise of the film is interesting as the writers try to build plausibility into a giant monster movie. Heads up, they failed. Flat acting, loud noises, and CGI don't make up for a dull, lifeless, and wasted script. Skip it.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: B+. A sequel that's better than the original. The star of the film is the CGI that makes you believe the apes are there. The cast is solid with Jerry Clark's Malcolm growing into understanding of Cesar and the apes. There are many moments that reminded me of Lion King, and the plot is predictable at times but eminently watchable. Go support good cinema and watch the film.

Snowpiercer: A. I have a soft spot in my heart for Korean directors, post-apocalyptic futures, and heavy symbolism. This film has these in spades. The surprisingly deep cast (Chris Evans, Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton, and Octavia Spencer to name a few) delivers some serious character work. The real star on the film are the visuals and symbolism. Go watch and enjoy some good cinema.

Robocop: C. The first is a cult classic. The second is...ok. There is nothing I didn't outright hate anything in the film, and there is plenty to like. Michael Keaton is slimy and villainous. Jackie Earle Haley is creepy. The rest f the supporting cast is good. But Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy doesn't make the audience connect with him or care about him. Rentable if only for the rest of the cast.

Need for Speed: F. I admit it, I love a fast car and great chase scenes. I also am a fan of Aaron Paul and wanted his first theatrical release to be better than this predictable, derivative, dreck. Fast and the Furious 2 was better. Tyrese Gibson acts better than most of this cast. This movie just makes me sad with wasted potential.
