On October 2, 2026, Self-Realization Fellowship hosted the Indian Consulate General and delegates at Lake Shrine to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The ceremony began with a floral garlanding of the sarcophagus containing Gandhi’s ashes, followed by a period of silent prayer. Heartfelt messages from Consul General Dr. K. J. Srinivasa and Brothers Vishwananda and Satyananda offered a united tribute to the enduring legacies of both Mahatma Gandhi and Paramahansa Yogananda.

Following the ceremony, the delegates and guests participated in a procession along the Lake Path before gathering for an Indian-style reception in the Court of Religions. Lake Shrine thanks the Indian Consulate in Los Angeles for sharing this commemorative event. The Consulate sent a gracious letter of thanks, quoted here in part:

"The serene setting of the Gandhi World Peace Memorial and the thoughtfully organized program provided a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. We deeply appreciate the warm hospitality extended to our delegation and guests throughout the event. We are grateful for the support and dedication of everyone at SRF who contributed to making the event both memorable and inspiring.

"We value the association between the Consulate and Self-Realization Fellowship and look forward to continued collaboration and engagement with SRF Lake Shrine in the years ahead."

Enjoy our photo tribute! Jai Guru!

Paramahansa Yogananda pictured with Mahatma Gandhi in Wardha, India, 1935. As part of a yearlong journey to his beloved motherland, Yogananda traveled to see Gandhi at his ashram. This picture was taken on a Monday, Gandhi’s day of silence, and Yogananda is shown reading a note Gandhi had just written. Their interactions during Yogananda’s visit, including Gandhi’s request for initiation in Kriya Yoga, are chronicled in a chapter of “Autobiography of a Yogi.”

In 1925 (the year Yogananda established his international headquarters in Los Angeles to spread the teachings of Kriya Yoga worldwide), Gandhi visited Yogananda’s Yogoda Satsanga school for boys in Ranchi. Expressing keen interest in the balanced curriculum of the Yogoda program, he inscribed in the guest book a gracious tribute.

Today, October 2, is the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, and we honor Gandhi’s great contribution to the betterment of our world with the following words of Yogananda from his autobiography: “The nonviolent voice of Gandhi appeals to man’s highest conscience. Let nations ally themselves no longer with death, but with life; not with destruction, but with construction; not with hate, but with the creative miracles of love.”

Jewish Tradition: Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement,” as the verse states, “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before G‑d.”1

When: The 10th day of Tishrei (in 2026, from several minutes before sunset on Sunday, September 20, 2026 until after nightfall on Monday, September 21), coming on the heels of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year, which is on the first and second days of Tishrei).

How: For nearly 26 hours we “afflict our souls”: we abstain from food and drink, do not wash or apply lotions or creams, do not wear leather footwear, and abstain from marital relations. Instead, we spend the day in synagogue, praying for forgiveness.

For the week before Yom Kippur (known as the 10 Days of Repentance), special additions are made to prayers, and people are particularly careful with their mitzvah observance.

Just as Yom Kippur is a day of fasting, the day before Yom Kippur is set aside for eating and preparing for this holy day.
