I enjoyed painting the Shangri-La in Bonita Springs so much last year, I returned for a second time this year. I loved its Spanish-Mediterranean architecture. It was built in 1921 and is a key example of the Spanish-style architecture that was popular in Florida during that era.

This painting took a whole lot of green organization. I suspect how I organize green is a bit different than how they do it at Augusta National but in honor of the masters starting tomorrow I’ll call this painting “Green Organization”. 11x9 oil on panel

In the Sarasota Flordia area lies a 37,000 acre park of vast wetlands providing some of the best bird, alligator viewing in the state. I spent the day here captivated by the swarms of birds circling the colonies of alligators below. Birds and alligators share a “mafia-style” mutualistic relationship, where wading birds (egrets, herons) nest high in trees directly above alligators to protect their eggs from predators like raccoons. The alligators act as bodyguards, keeping predators at bay, while eating chicks that fall from the nests.

Vultures and alligators, on the other hand, coexist as competitors in a scavenger-predator relationship, often gathering over the same food source. While they usually ignore each other, vultures (specifically black vultures) will eat dead alligators, and alligators may attack and kill vultures if provoked or hungry.

I’ve always struggled with Palm trees. They are such emotional trees. The problem is that they sway. However, I think I’m finally happy with these. Painted on location in Naples Flordia.

Painting is about choice.

I had a friendly person walk by me and ask if I was painting the alligator 🐊. Sure enough, when I looked to the edge of the pond I saw the eye at the end of the snout looking at me.

I choose to leave out the eyes… 👀 …This time.

I completed this 12x16 oil of a scene from Riverwalk Park at Bonita Bay last week. Plein air groups of both Naples and ft Meyers joined me for a delightful day.
