"Man is so great that his greatness appears even in knowing himself to be miserable. A tree has no sense of its misery. It is true that to know we are miserable is to be miserable; but to know we are miserable is also to be great. Thus all the miseries of man prove his grandeur; they are the miseries of a dignified personage, the miseries of a dethroned monarch…What can this incessant craving, and this impotence of attainment mean, unless there was once a happiness belonging to man, of which only the faintest traces remain, in that void which he attempts to fill with everything within his reach?

Should the king in exile pretend he is happy there? Should he not seek his own country? His miseries are his ally; they urge him on. And so let them grow, if need be."
John Eldredge, "The Journey of Desire"

"Your thoughts transform your world. They actually have substance, emit electrochemical matter and create the world in which you live. Your thoughts are not the result of what happens to you; what happens to you is the byproduct of your thoughts" Dr. R. Heard "Soul Detox: Flush the Gunk That's Holding You Down!"

There’s an old saying, though I’m not sure who to give credit to, that goes like this: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” It has nothing to do with universities or teacher shortages. As we go through life and make an intentional effort to develop our gifts, our talents, our skills, ou...

“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" (Habakkuk 2:14).

One morning several years ago I was having a conversation with our Father who art in heaven, sort of pondering the meaning of my existence. Not that I'm a tortured soul poet, but I think we all ask this question at various points along this journey: "Why am I here?"

Of course, He answered. My God is not the silent, brooding type. He loves to talk more than I like to listen.

"To cover the earth with My glory."

I knew what He meant even before I could form the objection, "Come on, Dad. How much earth covering can a wife, mom and grandmother do from the Dallas burbs?" If I had asked that question, the answer would be it's not how much I can do, but how much He can do through me.

I write or take what others have written and make it shine. I love both parts of the gift God has given me. Before you get testy with that statement, it is not vain to say God has given me an ability. In fact, it's completely humbling to remember and proclaim I have nothing to do with the ability. It's all His.

God is no respecter of persons. I believe with every proton, electron and neutron of my existence He's given gifts, abilities and skills to all His children. He didn't give them for personal glory, although we do reap the benefits of them. God gives us life, endows us with gifts, and sets us free through salvation so we can help others, so we can experience the joy of a satisfying and fulfilled life, and most of all, so we can reflect His glory so brilliantly it will cover the earth. And when that happens, His Kingdom comes!

I have ghostwritten many published books and have worked as developmental editor, copy-editor, co-writer or proofreader on more books and publications than I can name in my 30-plus-year career. The majority of my experience is in nonfiction, but I have successfully worked on the fiction side of the...
