We are pleased to announce our Grand Marshal for the 2026 Home of Champions Rodeo Parade!

Hank Tuell of Luther, Montana, has dedicated his life to service—both to his country and to his community. A decorated U.S. Army veteran, respected community leader, and ordained Deacon, Hank embodies the spirit of commitment, compassion, and leadership honored by the Home of Champions Rodeo Parade.

Hank served 28 years in the United States Army, including service in the Vietnam War as a MEDEVAC helicopter pilot. Flying dangerous rescue missions under the call sign “DUSTOFF,” he helped evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield, saving countless lives under extreme combat conditions. For his extraordinary courage and service, he received numerous military honors including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with 6 OLC, Soldier’s Medal, and Purple Heart.

During his military career, Hank commanded at every level. He also held many leadership roles in the Army’s medical department and became the first Chief of Staff for the newly formed U.S. Army Medical Command. He later served as Commander of Fort Detrick, the Army’s Medical, Research and Development headquarters. After retiring as a full bird Colonel, Hank continued serving globally through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), helping establish vaccination programs around the world.

Following his military service, Hank continued dedicating himself to helping others. In Red Lodge he became deeply involved with Operation Second Chance, an organization supporting wounded, injured, and ill service members and their families. Through this work he helped organize retreats, outdoor activities, and community support programs for veterans. Hank has also been active in the Yellow Ribbon Community initiative, the Beartooth Elks Lodge 534, and VFW Post 4725, where he has supported numerous programs honoring and assisting veterans.

Hank’s commitment to service extends throughout the Red Lodge community. He has volunteered and served on the board of the Red Lodge Senior and Community Center, working with programs that support local seniors. He also has served on the boards of our Historical Society and Art Guild and has been instrumental in organizing community outreach efforts. In recognition of his ongoing dedication, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte honored Hank as a recipient of the Governor’s Veteran Commendation, recognizing veterans who continue to make a lasting impact in their communities.

In recent years, Hank has embraced another calling—spiritual service. After years of study, he was ordained as the first Deacon of Calvary Episcopal Church in Red Lodge, where he helps lead worship, provides pastoral care, and works with the community to support the sick, poor, and those in need. Hank often says that service doesn’t end at the church doors: “The sermon starts when you walk out of the church and how you behave.”

Whether serving in combat, supporting fellow veterans, helping seniors, or ministering to those in need, Hank has spent a lifetime putting others first. His courage, humility, and unwavering dedication to service make him a fitting choice as the 2026 Home of Champions Rodeo Parade Grand Marshal.

Hank’s kindness and dedication to others also held a special place in the heart of Glory Mahan, beloved longtime parade director, whose memory continues to inspire this tradition.
