My Story
It was a brisk, Autumn evening in Brooklyn when I stepped into the maternity store where I had briefly worked after college. While searching for a baby shower gift, I caught up with the woman working there. After a moment, I asked her a very candid question: How do you work retail and manage to support yourself living in Brooklyn? What is it you are ~actually~ doing?
The woman told me she was a doula.
I’d known what a doula was on a surface level, but after I probed for more details, I felt an odd sense of euphoria, like I had just finished a jigsaw puzzle. Everything I had been discussing with my career counselor came together in this one moment.
When my partner and I left the store, she turned to me and said, “Jodi, when that woman said doula, your face lit up.”
