Join us as we celebrate the cinematic legacy of the late paulreubens , better known to the world as P*e Wee Herman, with a 35mm double feature screening of Tim Burton’s classic P*E WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE (1985) and its follow-up, BIG TOP P*E WEE (1988)!

At sundown, P*e Wee Herman sets off on a cross-country adventure in search of his stolen bike in P*E WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, meeting all manner of kooky characters along the way, in one of the most whimsical and bonkers comedies of the 80s!

With cameos by Cassandra Peterson ( ), realegdaily James Brolin, a bombastic score by dannyelfman , and Large Marge reigniting your kindertrauma on the giant Mahoning screen!

Once P*e Wee reunites with his tantalizing two-wheeled true love, it’s time to run off and join the circus in BIG TOP P*E WEE, as our bowtied hero falls for a trapeze artist (Valeria Golino), much to the dismay of his fiancée (Penelope Ann Miller). Who will win P*e Wee’s heart, and can he help save the circus?

So put on your bow tie, practice the “Tequila” dance, and come to The Mahoning Drive-In to celebrate P*e Wee Herman with themed raffles, food specials, a photo op, live DJ, and pop culture vendors that would make Amazing Larry flip his Mohawk!

COMING THIS SUNDAY!
Our newest print for the 30th anniversary screening of the atmospheric gothic action love story The Crow. Available this Sunday at the Mahoning drive in! Our print depicts the deaths of Eric and Shelly’s attackers… Funboys needles, Tin-Tins throwing knives, T-birds duct tape and fire, and Sk**ks short trip through a window. In the film Eric Draven, after being resurrected, feels the horror and pain of everyone he touches. He also inflicts that pain onto his attackers as an immortal ghost powered by and connected to the crow. He carries Myca’s eye and Shelly’s engagement ring. Prints will be extremely limited, get one this Sunday.

Tonight! We whipped up this print celebrating David Lynchs’ films and the man himself. Our goal with this print was to make it feel like a lynch film. In it, the viewer is alone, but is being watched. (The security camera is the same one that the mystery man holds in lost highway) There’s an (often used in his films) lamp on top of a floor model television who’s light beam cuts sharply across a picture of Laura Palmers throat, to symbolize her strangulation. The tv dial points to uhf 77, David Lynch’s age and favorite number. A lone cigarette burns in a dirty ashtray, another often used imagery in his films. Even the font is used in most of his credit sequences. Limited edition of 200 available tonight and tomorrow at the mahoning drive in theater.

We were one of the lucky families that had HBO when it was first made available in our area when we were kids. Between showings of Jewel of the Nile and Bill Cosby Himself was this hour long special of this dude in a grey suit and red bow tie that acted completely insane in front of a live audience. His surroundings were clunky, his props were over the top, and he acted like a little kid. It was in one word, "weird"...and we loved every second of it. We'd watch it every time we saw it was going to air. (We actually set clocks to it)

Years later, an unknown director by the name of Tim Burton made a full-length feature film about this same character. We begged our mom to take us, but didn't see it until it was released on VHS about a year later.
The music, the set design, the corny yet overwhelmingly charming supporting cast made this one of the films we would watch so often we memorized every line. An instant classic.

Shortly after, CBS announced a half-hour show starring this guy that would air during the holy grail of kids' programming days, Saturday mornings. Goddamn we were excited! We suffered through the bu****it shows like Kissyfur and The Care Bears Family in anticipation of the premiere of this singular event we had built up so much in our minds and hearts...

And hot damn, it did not disappoint! From the claymation opening with the calming lansdcape/soundscape to being smacked in the face by Cindy Lauper screeching through the rest of the opening theme song, we were hooked. It was bright, colorful, steeped in a classic kids show and counter culture we didn't understand yet, but were enamored by. This guy went against ALL conventions (this period of the 80s was ruled by conservative ideals, hateful story lines, war, etc..). But through it all, in all of his childish games and banter with the playhouse puppets and cast, the message that came through loud and clear was, be kind.

And man that stuck with us, through our daily interactions and through our ideals.

So thank you Paul Reubens, thank you for showing us that its ok to be as weird as you want to be, to create whatever makes you happy, and to unapologetically love with all of your heart.
