Located on the corner of 6th Street and Main in downtown Rapid City, Prairie Edge stands two stories high and stretches out for half a block. The brick, wood, and glass storefront have been restored to its original 19th century glory. Inside, the hardwood floors and polished cabinetry bring to mind the spirit of the Old West, while the distinct smell of sweetgrass and soft sound of a Lakota flute evoke the mystique of the Great Plains Indian.

Today is Native American Day in South Dakota.

In 1990, South Dakota became the first state to officially replace Columbus Day with Native American Day as part of the state’s Year of Reconciliation.

For us, today is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the cultures, histories, traditions, art and contributions of Native people, not only here in the Northern Plains, but across the country.

We hope you’ll take a little time today to learn, listen and celebrate.
