The APEX Gallery invites you to view and/or participate virtually in some collaborative events and lectures happening over the next few days.
Visiting artist Geno Luketic is a ceramic artist and ceramic arts instructor at University of Dayton in Ohio. His work is currently focused on sustainability in ceramics… specifically researching the origins of 32 minerals commonly found in ceramic glazes and clay bodies (one is Feldspar, mined right here in the Black Hills at Pacer Minerals in Custer). The results of this collaborative research are being/will be used to create a (sort of) physical map in the APEX Gallery. Geno created 32 visually similar wooden panels on which he applied each mineral as a starting point. I then created a wooden panel that contains the visual map, or layer of maps, that each piece will be connect to using string. See the attached PDF for a visual reference.
Geno was set to come to campus last semester to work directly with SDSM&T students, but the shutdown forced us to re-think this project. While there is still a physical show in the gallery, we have moved the collaborative research based elements completely online. Over the coming week, mainly towards the end of the week, there will be quite a few ways for you and your students to participate and/or engage with myself and Geno. I know the semester is very close to being over, but if you are interested we would be happy to have you for any of the following events.
