Tanksounds

Tanksounds THE TANK is an acoustical marvel, a spiritually altering experience found nowhere else on earth.

A 65’ tall, 37’ across rusted steel water tank – never used – was discovered in Rangely, Colorado by sound artist and sonic thinker Bruce Odland in 1976. A small group of musicians and sound artists has been recording there ever since. The Tank Center for Sonic Arts is an organization of eclectic artists, sonic explorers, and practical minds who have come together to save and develop this magnificent acoustic resource. This growing organization seeks to introduce courageous performers and passionate listeners to THE TANK, to make the music recorded at the TANK available through the TANK CHANNEL, and to use the TANK as a way to bring the community of Rangely together with musicians and sound artists from around the world for education, cultural exchange, and performance.

2026: the TANK has again been a beacon for artists around the world and a key facet of local culture in its home of Rangely, Colorado.

INTO THE NEXT DECADE
We celebrated an 11th TANK Solstice Festival with a concert by Alan Watts and Neal Johnson playing an array of transducers and solenoids, to vibrate the steel of the TANK itself, creating a beautiful ode to the TANK's past, present and future, called Ferromancy.

Then on Labor Day weekend, we brought two choruses to the TANK: David Hykes and his renowned Harmonic Presence Choir, and Boulder's own Resonance Women's chorus, for a thrilling weekend of uplifting voices.

IN RANGELY AND AROUND THE WORLD
The TANK has always been a point of pride for the remote and rural community of Rangely, Colorado. The TANK's free concert series and free public hours every Saturday honor that support.
The TANK also reaches out to bring its resonance to the widest possible community. In August, twenty-two invited artists from around Colorado came to the TANK for the first Long Way gathering, the TANK's way to honor diverse voices and make that communal connection.
Your donation enhances local culture in Rangely and brings the TANK's innovative programming to a wider world.

BRUCE ODLAND, 1952-2026
In September, the TANK lost our dear friend and founder, Bruce Odland. Bruce discovered the TANK's world-class resonance in 1976 and led the effort to renovate the structure and start The TANK Center for Sonic Arts in 2013.
We will move forward, sustained by his spirit.

500 CLUB
Last year a dozen of you each donated at least $500 to the TANK's fall campaign, leading to our most successful drive ever.
Will you join the $500 Club and give us a strong start this year? You'll get a free ROUND SOUND album download, and The TANK will give you special recognition in our programs and flyers, and on-line promotions in 2027.

THANK YOU!

Sonic thinker, composer and sound artist, Sam Auinger, began collaborating with the late Bruce Odland in the 1980's, co-founding O+A 1989. He's written an extraordinary piece recapping their 3+ decades of work together, and we've posted it on the TANK's Substack. Lots of stills, audio, video, and theory - a beautiful deep dive.

You can read it now at https://tanksounds.substack.com/p/thinking-with-the-ears

Sam's piece will be published as a chapter in the forthcoming book Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Reader 2: Sound in Artistic Research.

Saturday, September 5, 2026, David Hykes and Harmonic Presence. 8 PM Mountain, Rangely CO. We are stoked!

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, The Tank presents an extraordinary group of singers, David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir: Hykes, Timothy Hill, Seth Markel, and Blandine Hardillier.

Hykes is an American composer, singer, musician, author and meditation teacher. A pioneer in new music, contemplative chant, and healing sounds, he founded Harmonic Chant in New York in 1975, the year he also founded his legendary group, The Harmonic Choir, considered to be one of the world’s pre-eminent overtone ensembles.

Just a few of tickets left for seats inside the TANK, but more are available for outdoor seating, under the stars.

Enormous thanks to the friends of The TANK who have helped make this happen.

Today (2026-08-16) marks fifty years since Bruce Odland was waylaid by a couple of Rangely locals and taken to a huge, abandoned water tank for a kind of hazing. They put him through the only entrance, a 19-inch porthole, and banged on the outside with rocks and boards.

When they stopped banging, Bruce found himself in an astonishing sound cloud. He immediately brought his musician friends back to the Tank for their first session in it.

A decade later, Bruce brought another group of musicians to the Tank and began to record a first album, Leaving Eden, on an early digital two-track machine. Booming percussion, delicate keyboards, a children’s choir, a male chorus, penny whistles, Irish pipes, and much else, in many layers of late-night Tank recordings.

After years of further work--recording, mixing, mastering--Leaving Eden came out on CD in 1991.

Then, last spring, Bruce found the original 24-track digital master of the album and was astonished to hear the rich detail of the mix. So much had been lost on that early CD.

And so, to honor this anniversary, celebrate Bruce’s history in the Tank, and reclaim the lost glory of this record, the Tank is releasing a newly remastered mix of Leaving Eden on the Tank’s Round Sound label. Out this fall.

Thank you, Bruce.
And thank you, all the wonderful people who have come and continue to make awesome sound in The TANK.

Last week the incredible LaFrae Sci (Imaginationist/Technologist/Composer Black-futuristic/orchestral/experimental-entrepreneur, curriculum dvlpr, educator, facilitator, Conductor) recorded a beautiful piece, Kaze (KahZeh), in a remote TANK session.

We asked Frae-Frae if she could write about that experience for The TANK’s Substack. She said yes, and it’s a must-read for Tanksters. Stripping away assumptions. Following the sound.

The essay, the recording, videos and links to other adventures... Link in our bio or https://tanksounds.substack.com/p/the-incredible-lafrae-sci-in-and

Thank you, Frae-Frae!

Percussionist, composer and improviser Sean Hamilton spent some time last week experimenting and recording in The TANK.

Afterwards he sat down with TANK lighting tech Caleb Wiley to talk about the experience. The full video and transcript are over on our Substack, along with links to some of Sean’s work elsewhere on the web.

Take a look and listen. on Substack (and link in bio).
Thank you, Sean.
