I made a new piece for our upcoming Brown & Blooming exhibition, and this one is called Dog in Red.

It’s a small piece, only 4 x 6 inches, but I wanted to see how much movement and detail I could fit into such a small space.

One thing I’m especially proud of is the line work. I used a liner brush to create the thin black details around the dog, the flowing shapes, and the smaller marks throughout the painting. Working at this size meant slowing down and being really intentional with every line.

I love how the dog almost feels like it’s floating through the red space.

Dog in Red will be part of Brown & Blooming, our upcoming community art exhibition in Durham.

It’s hard to believe we’re this close. After months of writing, illustrating, revising, printing proofs, and making those final little changes, my second children’s picture book will be available this Sunday, August 30.

Tony’s story is about a kid who loves painting stars, even when the things he loves make him feel different from the kids around him. Through his story, I wanted to explore creativity, confidence, belonging, and what can happen when we feel safe enough to share the things that make us who we are.

I’m so excited for you to finally meet Tony and see where his stars take him.

We’re getting closer! Tony Paints Stars / Tony Pinta Estrellas comes out August 30.

When I started creating Tony, I kept thinking about children who grow up feeling like the things they love make them different from everyone around them.

Tony loves painting stars. He loves filling his sketchbooks with galaxies, comets, and the night sky. But when the kids around him seem interested in completely different things, he starts wondering where he belongs.

I wanted this story to remind children that they shouldn’t have to make themselves smaller to fit in. Sometimes sharing the thing that makes you feel different can be exactly what helps someone else feel safe enough to share who they are too.

I can’t wait for you to meet Tony.

Save the date!

For the past year, we’ve been creating a body of work that asks a simple question:

What does it mean to bloom as we celebrate our diversity, our language, our cultures?

Brown and Blooming is a collection of paintings about identity, migration, q***r joy, cultural pride, healing, and belonging.

Many of the artists grew up in Latin American Countries or have heritage from Latin America and many of us inherit stories about who we are. This exhibition explores who we are becoming and we are bestowing to future generations. These works imagine something different: a future where we get to define ourselves.

We’d love for you to join us for the opening.
