Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we have canceled our final 2 performances of Medea (October 31st at 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm). Please know that this decision was not easy to make and is made with extremely heavy hearts.

While we will no longer have live performances today, keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for information regarding a filmed performance that will be available to watch online within the next several days.

"The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation. The theatre is a spiritual and social X-ray of its time. The theatre was created to tell people the truth about life and the social situation." - Stella Adler

In honor of today's deadline, we flashback to the not so distant past of August 2020. Check out this behind the scenes clip of The Activists, earlier in our rehearsal process. Think of the women who came before you and their fight for the right to vote.

Addie Waites Hunton was an African American suffragist who was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1875, but raised in Boston.  She graduated from Spencer College of Commerce and became a teacher in Alabama.  After the death of her husband in 1916, Addie Hunton volunteered for YMCA service during World War I, assisting African-American troops in France for over a year. She was a strong civil rights activist, serving on the board of numerous councils and clubs.  Ms. Hunton died in 1943 leaving behind a legacy of civic engagement and fearless outspokenness.

LWV-Wake is a cosponsor of Meredith College’s performance original work The Activists. The show, written by Meredith students, features five actresses portraying historical suffragist figures, plus current feminists and students (past and present). It centers around the fight for a woman's right to vote and discusses the unfair treatment of black women who were not included in the 1920 amendment. The Activists also deals with the Equal Rights Amendment from the 1970s until today. This play is a devised piece, written by a group of students under the tutelage of Lormarev Jones, a Meredith graduate and current adjunct in the theatre program. Running time is one hour. Due to COVID-19, the performance will be pre-recorded and made available online on August 26th, Women’s Equality Day.

In the devised model, a theatre company begins without a script and follows a five step process of research, creation, development, rehearsal, and performance to produce a new work. “Our goal in producing this new work, using the devised approach to create theatre, is to support both the celebration of the 19th amendment as well as the School of Arts & Humanities' theme of Activism, Then & Now,” said Catherine Rodgers, Professor of Theater at Meredith College. “This will expose our students to a new genre of theatre-making and hopefully bring to life previously unvoiced women's stories in our nation's history.”

About

The Meredith College Theatre program entertains and educates the Meredith College community and the Triangle area with four main-stage productions and up to four student led productions each year. Theatre majors can expect a rigorous training program and will receive ample opportunity to perform, manage, and design based upon her drive and area of interest. We offer a B.A. in Theatre, a K-12 Licensure in Theatre, and a Musical Theatre concentration. The faculty are all active professionally in their area of expertise and frequently offer students the opportunity to gain experience outside the college campus.

As a theatre major, you can focus on performance, production, or musical theatre. If you’re interested in teaching, K–12 licensure is also available. In addition to preparing you for a career in the field, earning a degree in theatre will develop your critical and reflective thinking skills, as well as increase your understanding and appreciation of the arts.
