HOPSCOTCH: A (Brief) History

It started in 2010, when Greg Lowenhagen and Grayson Currin, both then at the Durham alt-weekly Independent Weekly, decided that Raleigh needed a music festival. They envisioned a city-wide celebration where fans could “hop” from venue to venue.

The first Hopscotch ran from September 9-11 in 2010, featuring 130 bands across 10 different venues, including Deep South the Bar, Kings, The Hive, the Lincoln Theater, Berkeley Cafe, the Pour House, and more. This format gave fans an opportunity to explore the city and discover artists they wouldn’t expect.

Hopscotch instantly became a fixture of Downtown Raleigh culture. In 2015, the festival changed hands when it was sold to Etix founder Travis Janovich and his partners. Despite the change in ownership, the festival has maintained its reputation for booking across genres and lifting up North Carolina artists. 16 years later, that spirit remains a the heart of Hopscotch, and this year’s lineup is no different.

Hopscotch returns to downtown Raleigh from September 10-12. This year’s lineup features artists like Dexter and The Moonrocks, Cory Wong, King Princess, Soccer Mommy, Duckwrth, and the Sinseers, with sounds spanning indie rock and pop to R&B, funk, and soul. With three days of live music ahead, you won’t want to miss what Hopscotch has in store for 2026!
