The opera world has lost one of our great set designers, EZIO FRIGERIO, who died on Wednesday at the age of 91. He was best known for his collaborations with director Giorgio Strehler, among them a celebrated Mozart-da Ponte trilogy at La Scala. Other highlights included LA RONDINE which was seen in Paris, New York, and San Francisco; DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN in Toulouse; the tomb of his friend Rudolf Nureyev in Paris; and possibly the most beautiful production in Metropolitan Opera history, Zandonai’s FRANCESCA DA RIMINI.
"Harrell said he would see uniformed soldiers at the airport departing for the Persian Gulf, and think, “They were the same age as my students in the conservatory … How can I serve them?”
“So I started Heroes’ Voices, essentially, to let me do music therapy with veterans,” Harrell recalled."
Born on this date in Pesaro one hundred years ago, the great soprano RENATA TEBALDI (1922-2004). She made her debut in "Mefistofele" in 1944, and had her first big success singing in the reopening concert for La Scala in 1946 under the baton of Toscanini. She soon was a regular there, and at other leading houses, including Covent Garden (1950), Paris and Buenos Aires (both 1951), and was especially beloved at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she sang 269 performances of 14 roles between 1955 and 1973. Here she is in a stunning rendition of Leonora's aria from the Monastery Scene of "La forza del destino"
