LAST RITES: Call for Submissions

The end of an era some call “Classic Lump” is coming to a transitional point August 31st. On the Other Side, we’ve started an evolving, social monument called ‘Last Rites’. We are inviting artist’s to respond in an ephemeral and photographic way to tell the story of Lump which all began in 1996. If you had an exhibition or know anyone who was in a show, played a show or rented a studio between September 1996 thru August 2026, please think about submitting photos, invites, artwork (smallish) to our ever changing wall that tells the story of Lump. We will be making our way forward as things roll in. And in August we will invite the community to respond to what Lump has meant to them over these last 30 years! Spread the word!

Bill Thelen Exhibition “RISE UP” at Pilgrim Surf+Supply Tokyo
Bill Thelen
Bill Thelen(ビル・セレン)
アメリカを拠点に活動するアーティスト。ドローイング、刺繍、インスタレーション、ジンなど多様なメディウムを横断し、社会的な構造や個人の在り方をテーマに作品を発表している。現在はノースカロライナ州ローリー在住。

TeamLump ~ portals

Lump30 is coming to an end and TeamLump reunion!

Bill Thelen is ending an era of Lump this August 2026. Before the end, he has assembled multiple exhibitions, performances, celebrations and reunions. Big announcements involving the future of Lump and the space will be announced in June.

Here is a statement from Thelen, “I’m ending an era of Lump this August. I will retire and close out Lump as we know it. I started Lump (with my partner Med Byrd jr) in 1996 and 30 years seems like an excellent time to close out this chapter of my life. I hope you can celebrate with me!”

To kick off the last 4 months of Lump, we will get things rolling with a final TeamLump exhibition in the space called portals. On Friday, May 1st from 6-9pm there will be an opening celebration with multiple TeamLump core members (Michael Salter, Josh Rickards, Tyler Wolf, Jerstin Crosby, Leah Bailis, David Colagiovanni, Rich McIsaac, Megan Sullivan, Conner Calhoun, Leif Zidek, or Critter amongst others) in town to collaborate on one final show. Over the past years, we have lost our beloved members Thad Kellstadt and Jason Polan and we are building portals in the space as a way to reconnect to the space and honor it’s inception.

TeamLump is an artist collective that has been actively collaborating for over 2 decades, originating from the Raleigh, North Carolina project space Lump. Founded by Bill Thelen, the collective’s membership can vary slightly depending on the specific project. TeamLump has exhibited work in various locations, including London, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Winston-Salem, Richmond, Atlanta. They are known for their experimental and avant-garde approach, incorporating diverse media like drawing, video, sculpture, and musical performances into their imaginative installations.

On Saturday, May 2nd around 3pm, TeamLump will be doing a roundtable in the space to talk about things and record some oral histories. This will be open to the public.

The exhibition portals will run until May 30th and Lump is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5pm and by appointment.

Born in a small town along the ancient Silk Road, I’ve been surrounded by fragments of history carved into mountains and buried beneath the earth. I have been especially drawn to mortuary rituals and objects that carry both mourning and the summoning of rebirth. While learning about them through textbooks, museums, and media, I realized they were often depicted through nationalism and Oriental fetishization.

In my thesis exhibition, I decided to agitate the discourse around this familiar heritage. With hazy ink, soft clay, and layered papier-mâché, I conjure forms that are growing, dying, sprouting, and decaying. The paradoxes of these forms sit with the many contradictions in my life, situated within cultures, histories, and precarities.

Opening April 3, 6-9 pm.
