the nothing that is - Chapter 6 :
Drawing Room Invitational - a q***r, trans, non binary, 2 spirit, plwa drawing summit/ conclave opening at Lump on April 5th.

“So back in 2015, I curated the nothing that is (a drawing show in 5 parts) at CAM Raleigh. The exhibition then traveled to the Carnegie in Cincinnati and picked up drawers along the way. I’ve been thinking a lot about that show in recent years and I never felt it was complete and hopefully it will never be. I started drawing room (a q***r, nomadic, drawing initiative) in 2016 and I decided to add two more chapters.” -Bill Thelen

Chapter 6 investigates q***r/trans/nonbinary/2spirit drawing strategies and is presented by drawing room for its Invitational. Chapter 6 opens next Friday, April 5th and will grow and evolve until the end of its run May 25th. Chapter 7 will address ‘sound as drawing” and will take place in June.

It is with a heavy, heavy heart that we acknowledge the loss of our beloved friend Sam Mauney. Sam was an amazing guitarist, musician, artist, friend and longtime supporter of Lump. Sam actually made our first website in 1997, making us one of the first spaces in the US to have a website! Sam was an amazing human and we find it hard to imagine a future without him in it. We are going to have a public memorial at Lump, March 30th at 3pm to celebrate his life. There will be a wall to hang up photos, drawings, ephemera, etc honoring our dear friend. Anything left will be collected and given to his beloved partner Flea. 🕊️

We shall be open this Sat and Sun 1-5pm //

Un-excavate. Oil on canvas. 2024. I made this painting while staying in LUMP a week before the opening, the background is an observational painting of the front space, the painting becomes a reflective surface of it’s direct surroundings. The colors are minimized to cobalt blue, black and grey evoking a low glow, it feels like our eyes adjusting to a dark space. Next to a candle that emits no light, a grecian statue from antiquity is treated as though it were photoshopped, warped in it’s own histories, handled by a figure that is made out of the shrouds that fills an un-excavated site, made of the same shadows of Plato’s Allegorical Cave.

LUMP is proud to present the solo exhibition of Conner Calhoun - Like a Fog Holds the Light, a presentation of new paintings and drawings. Spanning many different themes and ideas Conner’s work mostly uses the self as a means to explore the psychological interior. Pushing the figure beyond its physical limits, setting it out on symbolic tasks, and contorting it into labyrinthine knots, ambiguous narratives unfurl, exploring the complex psychologies of recovery, grief, longing and desperation with humor and irreverence as a retainer of hope.

In newer paintings, the self turns a corner, enters another room and there’s a darkness that is as abrupt as relapse. The walls feel like shrouds that are moving, gently carrying gradients of light from one corner to the next, it feels oceanic, or like a crystal moving through a space that has a far off light source. Within these low contrast interiors, dimly lit figures and objects begin to emit their own lights, they wander around these closed off spaces like anchorites. Wordless scrolls. Handless clocks. When the space has deconstructed its own light, language and time is raptured, like a flower blooming inside out. We ourselves dive deeper and deeper into the self-cavern where we learn how to speak inside out. Light becomes more physical than our skeleton, it kisses us on the forehead, and whispers a sweet-myth out of our ear.

Conner Calhoun (B.1993) Currently lives and works in Winston-Salem N.C. He received a BFA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of Visual Arts (NYC) in 2015 and a MFA in Studio Art at UNCG in 2023. They are a q***r artist and curator based in North Carolina. Their most recent curatorial project is SLUG (Chapel Hill, NC), a project space by and for q***r people of the South. They worked as a Projects Coordinator at LUMP gallery (Raleigh NC) from 2017-2020. In 2016 they were the artist in residence at Leipzig International Artist Residency (DEU). In 2019 They were the artist in residence at Obracadobra (Oax, MX). Their most recent solo exhibition was All Jokes Aside at Greensboro Project Space (NC) in 2023.

Hey - Bill Thelen here. I just wanted to let y’all know I’ve signed on to direct for the year 2024 in hopes to fully realize Lump as a volunteer-based, artist-run space into the future. Lump has pretty much been this all along since our past directors (Kelly, April and George) were never paid a living wage. Right now it costs around $2000 a month to keep Lump open. We’ve written multiple grants, but we are also looking for community support. On December 1st, we will have a fundraising benefit. Artists and local businesses have generously donated work, objects and goods to help keep us running. Since a large part of our audience is fellow artists we decided to keep everything very affordable for the benefit. Everything is priced at $25, $50 and $100 to ensure artists were also given the option to buy (times are tough, especially for artists) and to give a percentage to Lump and keep some for themselves. It’s going to be a great night! Everything is cash and carry, so help us clear the walls! We will be open from 6-10pm with performances starting at 8. We look forward to seeing you and thank you all for supporting us over the past 27 years!!

Thank you Amy White for these words on Slump at Lump!

EXCERPT:
SLUMP. Some words do more heavy lifting than others, and I am rather in awe of the sheer tonnage this single-word title manages to bench-press, with meanings that cover "slack," "flaccid," "weak", "defeated," "pathetic," "depressed," "low ebb," and "doldrums" not to mention "bad posture" and "a period of time marked by failure."* This is a show that registers high on the coherence-of-curatorial-intention meter. A show with this title could have ended up as a zone of airless claustrophobic overwhelm, gallery as hoarder space, due to the sheer surfeit of potential work that could have been slotted within the “Slump” rubric. Instead the show is edited with drum-tight precision, each work positioned in the space for maximum flow and impact. This is a show that breathes. Good feng shui. It’s thus paradoxical: a show called "Slump" that is in itself highly articulated - crisp, concise, highly engaged and engaging. Go figure.
