Lt. Col. Joseph Henry Ward, M.D. First Black director of a Veterans hospital. Staffed free VA hospital in Tuskegee, AL, with Black medical professionals. Retired from the VA in 1936 and lived long enough to see the end of racial segregation in VA hospitals. Lt. Col. Ward died on Dec. 12, 1956. He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
