What does America sound like?

Endless possibility. Relentless ambition. Boundless imagination. Constantly reinventing itself.

Spend an evening with Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, fan favorite Clayton Stephenson, and your North Carolina Symphony for music by three composers who captured that energy in completely different ways.

Gershwin gave us one of music’s most beloved masterpieces with Rhapsody in Blue. Bernstein brought the streets of New York to the stage in West Side Story. And John Adams took the American sound somewhere entirely new with the massive, exhilarating Harmonielehre.

Some performances showcase an orchestra.
Others reveal its heart.

The North Carolina Symphony continues to raise the bar.

Under the direction of Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, Concertmaster Justin Bruns steps into the spotlight for Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, one of the most beloved and technically demanding violin concertos ever written. The music gives the soloist room to soar, carrying listeners through breathtaking virtuosity and some of the most beautiful melodies ever composed. Bruns says: “You’re swept into this concerto from the very first note.”

The beauty continues with Haydn's Symphony No. 49, "La Passione," with music of striking intensity, dramatic contrasts, and quiet reflection that will find its way from the stage straight to your heart.

This is the unmistakable sound of an orchestra performing at its highest level. This is your North Carolina Symphony.

Music Director and Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto sits down with Concertmaster Justin Bruns and asks a simple question: when those first notes begin on stage, is it scary?

Justin has been listening to Mendelssohn since he was young, and you can hear what this music means to him when he talks about first discovering it, learning it, practicing it, and eventually performing it himself.

There’s history there, but more than anything, there’s joy.

Hear what happens when that kind of connection meets the concert hall.

Yesterday, we welcomed over 1,200 students from 8 counties to our first Education Concert of the season in Raleigh. We were honored to host Secretary Pam Cashwell of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, who shared a full-circle moment with students, recalling how she experienced the Symphony as a fourth grader in Cumberland County. She returned to the concert hall to help welcome a new generation of students to that same musical experience.

We’re proud to continue that tradition with a full season of Education Concerts ahead!
