Diamante Arts and Cultural Center is pleased to announce "Border Paintings", a solo exhibition of recent work by Mexican American painter, Karen Rose, on view through April 11, 2025.

Landscapes are regarded as repositories of the beautiful and idyllic, often with desires for ourselves as occupying a state of ecological balance and harmony. Rose moves from these conventions, unravelling the many layers the landscape hides and makes apparent uncomfortable truths about our place in the world.

Our lives are lived on landscapes, and on them we record in our personal and collective histories. These works are a view into conflicts, deeply rooted in violence, greed and politics. Upon these landscapes, borders are drawn resulting in peoples’ lives changed or ended, where the absence of diplomacy and constancy of war, scar these otherwise harmless views in front of us.

Rose travels to these places and also takes them directly from film stills and news media, where she uncovers that the landscapes that are suggested as Mexico are in fact Spain, or, the paths we want to follow are the site of befallen mortar shell attacks in the Ukraine.

In her pursuit of her constructed and reimagined landscapes, Rose reminds us that we may also find peace in the landscape. She did just that in the series about the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

In a rapidly changing chaotic world, where environments are transforming into uncertain future ecological purgatories, where fictional stories can be seen in a movie or where the destruction of human life and culture are constant, the artist reminds us that we can still make art out of our worst predicaments.

DACC presents, Border Paintings, a solo exhibition by Karen Rose, a Mexican-American painter, who explores political, personal and cultural narratives she identifies embedded in the landscapes she paints.

Rose's process varies and draws from Western movies as source, where Iberic landscapes were used to represent México in movies and from landscapes that have deep personal meanings for her.

It asks viewers to consider how can this legacy of innovation help us navigate world defined by rapid technological and social transformation, and what does it mean to create art in the spirit of Modernists, today?”

“Modernism Redux” is the inaugural exhibition from our newest program, “Community Highlight Curatorial Arts Residency” a project featuring emerging curators from our arts community who are not Latino. Our mission is to support the professional development of artists. We endeavor to ensure opportunities are available to curate and exhibit to anyone in our arts community.
