Preview of NC Artists at Transfer Co. Ballroom Art Sale (Friday, October 4th - Sunday, October 6th)

The Art Sale at the Transfer Co. Ballroom is just days away! In addition to sculptural works and portraits, visitors will be able to view and purchase abstract paintings by artist Ben Knight.

Knight is originally from Chicago, IL and studied at Northwestern University and The Art Institute of Chicago. After living in New York City for many years, he and his wife moved to her hometown of Deep Run, NC to open their own restaurant, ‘Chef & The Farmer.’ They have been the stars of the award-winning PBS series, ‘A Chef’s Life.’ The series documents their lives as restaurant owners and parents.

Knight creates canvases with a sculptural dimension. He loves to explore texture and uses different brushes and techniques to create a three-dimensional effect. He is fascinated with color and often experiments with bold and dramatic palettes and shapes.

In a 2017 interview with CharlotteFive, Knight shared how running a restaurant has influenced his artwork. Amidst the fast-paced environment he has developed more patience and as a result, he described his painting style has become "softer."

Guests dining at 'Chef & The Farmer' can also see some of Knight's distinctive work on display. Visit the restaurant's website: https://www.vivianhoward.com/chef-the-farmer/

Artists - Leah Foushee Waller & Michael Waller

In addition to paintings, guests at the Transfer Co. Ballroom Art Sale will have the opportunity to view and purchase sculptural artwork by acclaimed artists Leah Foushee Waller and Michael Waller.

Leah is originally from Baton Rouge, LA and Michael is a Kinston, NC native. The talented couple met at East Carolina University where they both earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture. In 2003 they opened WallerFoushee Studios and created over a dozen public art projects, personal work, and historical restoration projects throughout North Carolina. One of their most famous works is ‘Major,’ the over life-size bronze bull in downtown Durham, NC. Leah and Michael have also been involved with the nonprofit organization Liberty Arts since it's conception. Liberty Arts is a collective of artists studios and a foundry. As stated on their website, the collective strives to enrich the local community with arts experiences that "inspire, empower, educate, and entertain."

Leah is currently working on a series of large-scale, cast metal vintage buttons. This series analyzes themes of motherhood, generations, and domesticity. Her sculptural pieces represent how mothers strive to 'keep it all together' as they balance their multiple societal roles. She is also creating cast metal bas-reliefs of plants. In these sculptures she examines the role of plants in the human practice of ritual, celebration, and habit.

Michael's most recent sculptural series represents the landscapes of North Carolina that he has treasured since his early childhood. His use of innovative, organic forms and textures reflects the beauty of our natural surroundings. He is also creating a basket series which represents the universal significance of family and togetherness. His adept use of steel in his basket series creates a notably intricate effect.

Several of their sculptures will be on display at the Transfer Co. Ballroom October 4th - 6th.

Artist - William Paul Thomas

William Paul Thomas is our first featured artist whose artwork will be displayed and available for purchase at the Transfer Co. Ballroom in downtown Raleigh, NC October 4th-6th. Thomas is originally from Chicago, IL and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has won numerous grants and awards and most recently was the Artist in Residence at the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University. He is a true documentarian and creates paintings, photographs and films to share his unique perspective and life experiences.

Many of his paintings are large portraits of Black subjects who have been significant figures in his life. Thomas incorporates a commanding, realistic painting style with text and symbols that challenge the viewer's initial perception of his subjects. One of the main goals of his portrait work is to overcome the stereotypes that are widespread in popular media.

Thomas primarily uses oil and acrylic on canvas. He has an incredible ability to capture the unique personality and spirit of each of his subjects. His work immediately engages the viewer while also provoking further contemplation and analysis. Several of his portraits will be on display at the Transfer Co. Ballroom October 4th-6th.

August 2019 NC Artist of the Month: Libby Smart

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a colorist is an artist "who uses color in a special or skillful way." There couldn't be a better description of Charlotte-based artist Libby Smart's style. Smart beautifully blends natural colors in landscapes, coastal scenes, still lifes and contemporary paintings. After establishing a successful decorative painting business for twelve years, Smart transitioned into fine art and has been creating outstanding works of art ever since.

Smart draws the viewer into her captivating paintings through her exquisite brushwork and use of color. She works mainly with oil on canvas but has recently used mixed media on paper. She has studied locally and abroad and finds inspiration in her travels and the outdoors. When her clients share that her paintings make them feel happy she knows she has truly succeeded.

Those interested in seeing her work in person can visit galleries in Greensboro, Charlotte and Morehead City. Smart also meets with clients who are interested in commission paintings to discuss sizing and other details.

The lightness of contemporary and graphic art is especially appealing amidst these muggy July days.

UK based artist Tom Abbiss Smith’s use of both dark and pastel colors offers a refreshing energy to the viewer. Pablo Picasso’s famous quote: “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” speaks to the power of Tom’s art to reawaken and inspire us during these late summer days. A lot of his work reimagines nature through abstract perspectives and shapes.

Many companies such as Chobani and Häagen-Dazs have featured his bright work in their products. His work is successful in diverse mediums such as digital collage, printmaking and painting.

What style of art most inspires you right now?

Are you creating any contemporary pieces?
