Lots of myths to bust in this one! If you’ve been following along with our series here, we’re taking all the myths that keep us from finishing our quilts and flipping them on their heads to uncover the real truth: that finishing our quilts isn’t half as complicated, scary, or impossible as we sometimes make it out to be in our minds.

The truth is, you don’t need fancy techniques, expensive equipment, or to be completely “ready” before you start finishing beautiful quilts. I have seen so many quilters, beginners included, successfully finish their own quilts. 💪

You can make this process as simple or as complicated as you want to, and beautiful quilting does not have to be complicated. Straight-line quilting is a timeless technique that can look absolutely stunning. You can keep it simple or eventually add interest with diagonal lines, echoed lines, grids, and other creative variations.

Custom quilting does not have to mean intricate motifs either. Adjusting the spacing between your lines or using start-and-stop quilting that highlights your piecing can create gorgeous texture and movement all on its own.

The moral of this story is that there’s no right or wrong when it comes to quilting, and you already have what it takes inside you to finish your quilts! ❤️

UFOs (unfinished objects, in quilting terms) are basically a rite of passage in my eyes. 🤭

I have quilt tops folded away, waiting patiently on their binding. And that’s okay. Sometimes a project needs to sit for a while, whether it’s because inspiration for a new one hit you harder, life got busy, the season changed and you weren’t feeling that fabric anymore, or you just needed a break from it for a bit.

Creativity doesn’t move in a straight line, and it definitely doesn’t move on a deadline. Some quilters work on one project start to finish, and that’s great if it works for you. But plenty of us have a whole stack of projects going at once, each one at a different stage, and that’s just as valid a way to create.

Starting something new doesn’t erase the progress on what’s unfinished. That quilt top is still there, exactly as far along as you left it, waiting for whenever you’re ready to pick it back up... next week, next season, or next year. There’s no expiration date on a UFO, and there’s no rule saying you have to earn the right to start something new. 🥰

You can use a walking foot for binding if you want to…but you certainly don’t have to! In the past, I have attached my binding with a ¼” piecing foot and then secured it with a clear view zigzag foot. Now I just use my HP presser foot for both steps of the process.

Just like with other parts of quilting, certain tools can make things easier…but there’s no one right way to do things. You can experiment to find out what works best for you. At worst, you unpick some stitches and start again…and you’ll have learned something along the way. ☺️

Today we’re talking perfectionism. Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought to yourself, “If my stitches aren’t perfect, the quilt won’t look good.” ✋ I know I’ve caught myself thinking this before.

There’s an old saying in quilting circles: if you can’t see it from a galloping horse, it’s good enough. It’s been passed down from quilter to quilter for generations, but the wisdom in it holds up. From a few feet away, individual stitches basically disappear.

Quilting is often much more forgiving than it seems. You can remove a section of stitches, restitch a line, adjust your plan, or simply keep going. I still do this myself more often than you might guess. A seam ripper can solve a whole lot along the way!

And here is something worth remembering: the beauty of something handmade is that a person made it. Not a machine. Not a factory. You. 💖

In a fast-paced world filled with automation and instant perfection, a slightly wobbly line or uneven stitch is a reminder that your own hands created this quilt. That is not something to hide. It is part of the story, and part of what makes your quilt so special. 🥹

Practice on the busier prints where the texture does some of the work for you, and let consistency build the way it always does... quilt after quilt, not because you willed your stitches into place on the first try. Give yourself the grace, and the practice. It’ll come.

MYTH: “A finished quilt with visible mistakes isn’t ‘good enough’ to use or gift.”

TRUTH: Use it! Gift it!

I’ve told the story before of how one of my granny’s most beautiful quilts has a big, visible patch on it, after our dog, Ginger, chewed a hole clean through it 🤦... and it’s never made me love that quilt any less (if anything it actually makes me love it more!).

Speaking on mistakes specifically, there’s actually a psychology theory for this called the “spotlight effect.” It’s the idea that we walk around assuming other people are noticing our flaws way more than they actually are... like there’s a spotlight following us around, shining right on every little thing we wish we could fix. But that spotlight only exists in our own heads. 🤲

The truth is, most people aren’t looking for your mistakes because they don’t know your quilt well enough to know what a “mistake” even looks like. They don’t know which seam gave you trouble, or where your stitches wandered off course. They just see a quilt someone made with their own two hands... and that’s the part that stands out.

Whether you’re keeping or gifting a quilt, it’s the love, joy, and sense of accomplishment that matters so much more than perfection. ❤️

You don’t need a fancy foot or expensive equipment to get started. All you really need to machine-quilt your own quilt is a simple straight stitch domestic sewing machine. A walking foot makes it easier (thus, I highly recommend), and it’ll usually only run you somewhere in the $15 to $30 range, depending on your machine, some machines even come with a walking foot. But you don’t even have to have one to start quilting.

You actually don’t need a sewing machine at all, either. Hand quilting is another wonderful option for anyone who wants beautiful results without any special presser feet, and hand ties are an even simpler route if you’re after something quick and cozy. Or, as always, sending your quilt to a long-arm quilter is another great option. 🧵

The moral of this story is there’s more than one way to finish a quilt and it is absolutely okay to simply start with what you have.
